can the 1446 transistors be upgraded to something larger ?

It can, but won't yield the additional power to justify the cost.

There's more to it than just "upgrading" transistors. The parts wrapped around the RF power transistors will have to be changed, to match the transistors you use. The parts in it now are correct for the SD1446 and guaranteed to be wrong for any larger type. Think of what happens if you change JUST the camshaft in a motor. Other stuff also has to be changed to get any advantage from it.

By the time you total up parts cost and labor, buying a bigger amplifier looks pretty cheap. You can build one with Mexican labor and sell it new for a LOT less than you can re-build one with American price labor. Every day that goes by, they get cheaper to buy, and more expensive to work on.
