Goose, I have a trc-492 also. I also have a problem with installing a workman 5 tone roger beep. If you figure it out, post a message

Roger beeps come in two basic varieties: 1) WITH a relay and 2) WITHOUT a relay mounted on board. Any radio that will ONLY receive with the mike plugged in needs the relay, whether or not the Beep Board has it.

Galaxy, Connex, Superstar and such radios that will receive WITHOUT the mike plugged in can use either kind of beep board.

Since I have never seen a TRC492, I'm just guessing that it may need the mike plugged in to receive. The Workman instructions used to show the hookup for an external relay. The Workman beeps have REALLY thin copper on the solder-side traces. More than once, we have seen a part get pushed down on the thing, and sever the copper foil under itself. Looking for cracked connections like this that need to be jumped has become a habit here any time a Workman beep won't work.

I hate to be the one to suggest something this easy, but I predict the beep board is just plain defective. I won't install one without hooking it up with gator clips to a power supply and speaker amplifier. I don't like to risk wasting the labor to install one unless I can SEE it key a continuity tester, and hear the beep for myself.

As for the instructions, they usually just plain stink. Period. Sure would be cool if somebody (else) tackled a proper update to the sheet that comes with the things. Just no real incentive, I guess.
