CAN THE 949 OR 959 BE CONVERTED OVER TO 10 METER CB RADIOS? IF SO, HOW? |

It can be with a crystal change and an alignment. I don't know which crystal off hand but yes it can be done..Actually it is the same crystal that the "L" kit (Expo Kit)changes in the 148 Cobra for extended 11 meters. 307 |

it can actually be done just by cutting to wires and adding switches where the wires have been cut. i have been very busy here lately and don't have time to look it up right now. but the info -is- on the net. one of the sites that has this info has a channel chart also. i know it works because i have done a few myself. i just don't have the info right off the top of my head as for which two wires to add the switches to. but like i said it is out here on the net. if it doesn't 'lock up' after the mod, let us know, and i'll give you the fix for that also. there are 2 ways fix it. |

Yes , the LSB/MSB ("N")can be shifted to the 10 meter band however the PLL loop filter is not wide enough unless a mod is done to it as well. The fast way is to order the crystal , 11.6295 I think , add the expo and replace X-3 on the Expo to the 11.6925. I did one years ago and it worked fine. If I recall the LSB (Least Significant Bit) and MSB (Most significant Bit) is at 277 or something like that to start. If I remember it would track from an "N" of 145 or so through 325 or so. Max channel window was 325 - 145 or 200 channels at 10 Khz step without the VCO mod. 307 |

I also want to add the MB8719 on the 949 is DIFFERENT than the Cobra 148. The 949 uses the internal pull-ups or some other internal circuitry as well as external. If you mod the 949 using pin 10 and 11 on the PLL , the IC will blow. Thats why the mod calls for the channel selector wires to to do the job. Found this out the hard way , had 6 to convert , 4 blew...2 stayed good. Bummer! 307 |

hey, 307 i think that we read this 2 different ways. i thought at 1st that we were reading it the same way, and that you were giving a harder approach to the modification. nothing against kookieman, but his question isn't worded where a solid conclusion could be drawn. there is no such thing as a '10 meter cb'. so i was thinking he meant a mod like for the 148's to widen the 11 meter band. i see now that you took it as turning the 949/959 chassis into a 10 meter ham rig. yes, if that is what he wants, that will need a more indepth modification. if he just wants to widen his 11 meter bad from the upper part of 26mhz to the very low end of 28mhz, the mod i suggested will work. i just found the info for that mod in my notes; find j33 at front of the radio near pll chip. there will be a a p6 and p5 wire. these wires control pins 10 and 11 on the pll chip. cut these wires and add switches. this will open the bandwidth of the radio. if it will not rx or tx in the expanded areas(pll fails to lock) you can either remove d3 from the vco module or replace c296 in the pll circuit with a .0015uf cap. if this is what you are after kookieman, i hope this helps. |
