I am trying to help a friend with a base station set up in a townhome that does not alow antennas. We can hide a small one on the roof as long as its under 5 ft or so. We put up the Midland 18-400 3 ft base antenna with belden rg8x coax 75 ft long on the peek but had poor results. Says it does not need any grounding. Well the swr is about 2 and it comes over the tv upstairs that is on a dish over 30 ft away and below it. Just keying the mic does it but cant here any modulation. We could not even talk 5 miles away with this antenna over 40 ft off the ground on a big hill! We can sit in front of the house on the mobil with the same radio on a wilson mag mount and talk to the same stations a give them over 7 lbs. So what now? Can I use a 4 ft firestik somehow or what? I can use a thinner antenna and go longer but not over 6 ft. Too obvious then. |

Thunderbolt, If I were to use a mobile ant. for a base (and I have) install a stainless steel 102" whip. Ground it using another ant pointing to earth. It's not to obvious and works well. If you would like more info, e-mail me. Address is in my profile. 431 |
