Swamper, you could probably raise the A-99 up 10'-20' and make a click or two improvement on your buddies meter.

This is not often considered when thinking about getting an antenna with a better signal response. If, in your case, an Imax did show a 2 S-unit improvement, it probably would show just about as much gain in the bad signals (noise) as it does in the good signals. Sometimes this noise difference is just enough to affect the readabality of a good signal. I have found when this happens an antenna with a little less gain can actually hear better than another vertical with higher gain.

You will have to weight this against any gains in TX signals you could make with the Imax so your buddy could appreciate your efforts.

So if you get the Imax and you can put both up, get a good switch box and compare the differences. Then let us know what you find.

What is the rule of thumb--3 db gain increase for 1 s-unit change? Anyway, I don't think there's enough difference in any groundplane antenna at the same height as the A-99 to give you that kind of increase. There's only so much db gain you can get from these antenna. We're talking 1 or 2 at the most increase in gain.--Two is probably pushing it.

I'm surprised you didn't tell Swamper to read all about the A-99 and I-max in the "Review" section. Just click on "Subscriber (Preview)" and then click on "Product Review".

The two reviews that Tech833 did on those two antennas were very, very reveilling. I think if anyone who owns a A-99 reads that review will probably use their A-99 as a back-up antenna or possibly a fishing pole.

By the way, the GPK's do NOTHING for transmit. However, they do seem to eliminate some TVI problems as long as the antenna is high enough.
