Im thinking about (at this time -THINKING- about it NOT buying!) trying a sweet 1600 run as base off of 2 astron 70 amp power supplies. Ive talked to several guys "in the know" including the well known John Mahoney over at Panthers and they all say it CAN be done but what i want to know is the RIGHT way to do it so it can be done. Im hoping some techs can chime up in here and help me out. I want to stay away from tube amps, anything that runs off of 220 volts and X force stuff so im leaning more towards the 1600 on 2 large power supplies.... Please serious replies ONLY!!!! |

I think you would want to run them in series. I havent done anything that big before but I did it with a couple of 3 amp powersupplys in series. Good Luck Taz |

they currently sell a 150 amper on the net somewhere i saw. it was about 500$ though but if your gonna run the power which i hope that you WILL either get this big power supply or put 2 70 ampes in paralel not series as the voltage will double in series instead of the amps! i have a local who uses a texas star 667 with the astron power supply and it just handles it! hey good luck. |

Hoosiercardinal, Wish I could help you on this one but I have not ever tried to run an AMP this big off of power supplies. Maybe one of the other techs can help answer your question. Sorry! Lon tech808 |

I have never looked for an Astron web site, but they would be the best place to ask first. If anybody knows the precautions to take doing this, it should be them. I have seen industrial power supply modules meant to be "bridged" for higher current, but they were built from the ground up with that feature in mind. The Astron probably isn't. It should at least be safe to combine them with the gadget used to safely combine dual batteries in boats or RVs. They refer to this as a "battery isolator". It would have to be a pretty big one. You will lose about a volt going to your amplifier if you do it this way. Nothin's free, as they say. 73 |

I do know where there is a 150a continuous duty switching supply available. If that would help drop me a line. |

I see i POed someone. Oh well they will live.. LOL Anyhow how would i hook them together and not do it in series? If it more work than its worth then i might just not do it afterall.. |

YES I get the idea!!!!!! So sorry if i have come off as "stupid and ignorant" on this subject to some of you guys!!! I just wanted some basic info on this forum maybe i should just find the info somewere else!!!!!!! I know if i ask my tech he will be more than able to help me out than to get info off of these lousy forums were everyone and thier brother can make dumb remarks and make the poor guy feel dumb!!! Taz you seem like a decent guy but at times i think you come across to some as being a smart a** teenager. Sorry to say that but thats the impression i get from you at times.... OK nuff said on my part and i think ill take a break from the forums for a while....... Bye.... |

I take it you guys in arizona are big on solar power and storage batterys? How about a schematic of 2 transistorized power supplys in parallel. It is not the same as two batterys,I tried it on two 2 amp supplys and fried the pass transistors,so what gives, huh? |

I RUN A 12 PILL ON TWO 6-VOLT 100 AMP SUPPLYS IN SEARIES WITH A LARGE DIODE IN BETWEEN TOTAL COAST LESS THAN $100. SUPPLYS CAME FROM SURPLUS CENTER |

Hey, cool, Johnny. I have looked at the price of old 5-volt switchers, wondering how three of them in series would do. Hadn't thought of diode-protecting them in series. I don't suppose Surplus Center has any 200-Amp diodes? I discovered the hard way that the Amp rating on a diode is for AC, not DC. Since a rectifier is only turned on and pulling forward current half the time, the effective DC current rating is half that. A 6 Amp rectifier just gets too hot with more than 3 amps of DC going through it. I suppose you can push the metal stud-mounted rectifiers a little harder by making the heat sink bigger, maybe? I'm just glad somebody decided to try this. 73 |

You Can link Astron RS or RM 70's together but I don't know if only with two or more. Bigbob, that's usually the case if you run two in parallel you end up getting those 2n3055 transistors. However, if you combine them before the regulation and combine the banks of transistors it makes one bigger PS. My 27A PS has 3 heat sinks with 2 transistors on each. The transformer is the same a in a 32 amp PS. I'm thinking about adding another heatsink with 2 more 2n3055's since I have 5 extra. I blew one a couple months ago and ordered all 6 since they are so cheap. I started replacing them and found that the 2nd one was the bad one so I have extras. |

Yeah I thought about changing out the mj2955s in my homade supply (5)@15 amps to five NTEs rated at 30 amps, but then I remember how hard it was attaching the wires on the inside of that 4.5" square aluminum tube{enclosure&heatsink in one},dc-fan on one end. It's under my desk and remotely switched, got a 40 amp trans.,470,000uf filter, and a one farad Stinger storage cap, used on boomer 400,hardly gets warm. |

Yup remember me telling you about my 3500 driving my old palomar 300A and how well it worked? Well it drives the KLV 1000P very nicely! I wont devulge the wattage readings on here out for all to see (meter swing argument posibilty) hear but i can tell you that what i see on my meter is pretty impressive! |

Hey that's great, I've looked at the 1000P, and thought it would be a great match for the 3500. I used my 3500 a few times to drive that old Henry 2K classic before I sold the amp, it did very well. Somebody had a 3500 on the yahoo auction this past week, it looked like a new one, had the orginial box and everything with it. It didn't sell, got up to about 250 I think, but he had a 350 buy it now price, guess that was his reserve. |

You may want to double check me but I use and highly reccomend an IOTA 90 amp power supply at my base with my Texas amps. A little bigger than I need but that way I am not running it full tilt constantly and assume it will last me much longer. I bought it on an internwet auction site new from a company in New Mexico. I am certain they had a larger one that will give you the 120 amps you require but as mine ran $400.00 yours will cost more unless you buy 2 70 amps or smaller for substatially less. IOTA is built very well and warantied. You get what you pay for but I did see cheaper options posted ahead of me worth investigating. |

I believe Astron used to carry a "bridging" device to use on 2 supplies. Don't know if they still do though. |

Need a volt meter to monitor my input voltage of my power supply radiojunk only has 15 volts need one for 35 volts, how about 2 15s in series then extrapolate, heck I don't know.Bigbob |

Use a potentiometer and and adjust it so full scale would be 45 volts, 1 volt equals 3. 35 volts would be just under 12 volts |

If u're not sure and new to the hobby, find out from the manufacturer what those requirements would be. Secondly, NEVER believe anything you read that starts with, "I think, I believe, I heard, or my fav My buddy did this and it worked! ( right before it blew up) Jase |

If u do the math.Allow say 50% efficiency.3200watts is divided by 14 volts = 228 amps. Rich |

Why not run a tube amp? Mine does well over a kilo and runs on 110V. The audio is cleaner and warmer with tubes! |

I have a 150 amp variable volt(13.8v to 17v) power supply I bought for about $500.00. I purchased it at CBS At Their Best several years ago. I do not know if they are still around. I do not have their number. I would rather deal with Copper but, they did not have one like that at the time. I hope this may help you. |
