You can add SSB delay. It'll be rough on SSB due to it is class C with driver, but it can be done. |

He's right. Some amplifiers are made to be LOUD on AM with no money spent to 'clean' them up for SSB. DaveMade is definitely in the AM-only category. If you want a SSB amplifier, the relay delay capacitor is the easy part. The best way to find out about an amplifier is to try it on your (or somebody else's) radio. QSO somebody whose opinion you can trust (important) and compare the SSB modulation between standby and operate. If the amplifier sounds raspier the lower you turn the mike gain, you are using an AM-only amplifier. Turning the mike gain higher and overdriving it will often be the "clearest", meaning (only)half as much gravel in the mouth. That's the clue. Lots of AM-only amplifiers come with an SSB switch. That's the cheap part. The additional parts (and engineering) that you have to put in for SSB cost more than just that delay capacitor and 'SSB' switch. Texas Star amplifiers are all biased for SSB and usually do okay. I've seen another one called "Skywave" that I know first-hand is MEANT for SSB. There's no substitute for listening. Even a legit SSB amplifier will sound terrible if somebody cut corners repairing it "just for AM". 73 |
