Im drooling over the Voyage VR9000. I was encouraged to buy a Galaxy 88 to match up to my Texas Star 400. After reading 307's review I want to make sure Im not making a mistake by changing to the VR9000. Based on the significant price difference, I think the VR9000 is the better buy. From what I see, the main difference is that the VR-9000 has 2 less bands (80 less channels) and no mic gain control(which doesnt make a difference if you stick with the stock mike). The VR-9000 has a built in SWR meter and otherwise performs the same in the "BIG RADIO" category. I am mainly using this rig for running up and down 11 meter and shooting skip on sideband. SO - 307 and anyone else, would I be making a mistake by getting the VR9000 and not the Galaxy 88? |

Hammunition, Cool name. The VR9000 is a brother to the Galaxy 88. I believe they use the same boards. There are a few minor differences like you said, but the main difference is the price! $120 less. I never use the mic gain on my radios anyway. I crank it open the whole way and adjust the microphone (I usually just crank it open a hair). The 9000 has a variable power setting where the 88 (If I remember correctly) only has a HI-LO switch. So you can have a lot more flexibility with your outgoing power with the 9000. Steve 181 |

I feel the same way also. I was hoping to use my RK56, will it work ok with no mic gain, or maybe an internal adjustment if needed? |

all I can say is you get what you pay for. the mic gain is something every radio needs. you'll be sorry! |

If your power mic has the adjustment capability to go from completely off to wide open, then use your mic to adjust your audio level. This may be a matter of opinion but I never touch the external mic gain on any of my radios. I turn them wide open and leave them there. I adjust the mic open just a bit to be loud but keeping out most background noise. I note at what level the mic sounds good for normal operations and where it sounds good (usually a slightly lower setting) when using an amplifier. My 2510 has a crappy push button HI/LO setting for mic gain. I never use it, never have. The radio is the best sounding rig I own. Steve 181 |

I do not use power mikes on any of my radios .The VR 9000 is loud and proud without a power mike. Now Copper probably won't like me saying this because they and other retailers sell hundreds of power mikes to the hundreds of people who are americanized and programed to believe that for every thing they purchase they must purchase some sort of accessory. |

What about the RK56??? |

What about the RK56? Are you saying that there is a drastic difference between a stock power mic and the RK56? I can answer that. Absolutely NOT. The RK56 is designed for the CB user who wants something more functional than the cheapo factory microphone that came with a lower end unit. Dont get me wrong, the RK56 is a great piece of equipment. But, its more of a personal preference because they are sturdy and look nice. Truckers will tell you all day how they love those Road Kings. The RK56 isnt going to make any drastic improvements to your transmissions if you have echo or a stock power microphone. Adding the RK56 to the VR9000 or the Galaxy would be a waste of money. Both have awesome echo and LOUD audio, why add the RK56? I have to assume our "anonymous" poster's Texas company has a huge sale on Road Kings right about now. They also dont carry the VR9000, which is priced considerably less than the Galaxy counterpart. You see, Copper has integrity and gives its customers a choice. THANKS GUYS!!! |

I found you actually need a little extra audio to get your SSB power up there. The mod circuitry of these radios are superior and you will get great sounding loud modulation out of them with a stock mic. The Astatic 575-M6 gives you a little more of a mod boost AND allows you to adjust the tone of your mod. It can take the edge off of tinny mod or raise the frequency of lower sounding muffled modulation. The element in an Astatic mic, in my opinion is far superior to the cheap elements in stock mics. It's basically a matter of opinion. What sounds good and works good for you, may not do it for me. Microphones especially have long endured debates about which ones are best. Steve 181 |

I asked about the rk56 because that is what I prefer to use! AND, try using a stock mic in a truck and all anybody will hear is your engine noise and road noise and tell you how "tinny" you sound. All I asked was if the rk56 would work with the 9000 since it didn't have a mic gain control. What has that got to to with a Texas company??? I drive a truck and live in Memphis, TN. |

I agree with Tech 181. Upgraded mikes are really a personal choice. Put an RK56 on a crappy unit and it will sound like a crappy unit with an RK56. If you want big radio sound and power, buy a big radio and forgo the purchase of over priced accessories. You see the same practice with kids who buy a junk car and cover it will expensive accessories. Its still a junk car and will run like a junk car. I see mikes as an aesthetic upgrade and really, for the most part, an overpriced accessory. Yeah the components may be better, but a majority of the stock mikes out there will do the job fine and last the lifetime of the radio. You can upgrade lawn mower tires, but is it really necessary? Internal adjustments on most decent radios allow it to perform sensationally on the stock mike. Especially the Galaxy and VR9000's. Just my opinion. |

Dear Anonymous Trucker in Memphis. The Truckers here in Florida are mostly diehard Galaxy folk. A majority of them run on stock mikes and I have yet to hear engine noise through a transmission. Is that possible? Im not calling you a liar, I just never encountered that yet. Believe me, the RK56 looks pretty dam nice, but I have yet to hear someone transmit significantly better and have him attribute it to his RK56. But again, its just my opinion. Stay safe out there!!! |

Hammunition, Maybe I wasn't making myself clear. What I mean is that my truck is very noisy in the cab, and the rk56 helps keep out all the background noise in the cab and puts more bass in my voice. As for maybe giving you the impression that I think the 56 transmits better, with more power etc, that isn't what I meant. The 56 just simply makes my radio sound cleaner in my truck. That is why I was wondering if the 56 would be ok in a VR9000 with no manual mic gain, didn't know if the 9000 would be able to adjust to the 56. Later! |

Dear Anonymous, I hear ya. I see you prefer the microphone more for its noise cancelling qualities. If you like the RK56 for that aspect, I suggest you check out the Road Devil. You may find a new loyalty. |

just a thought: Some people talk " into " a mic Others talk " across " a mic It makes a lot of diff in the noise that others hear. Talking into the mic, held in front of you, it will pick up noise. Talking "across" the mic. held sideways near your mouth......across.....will make it sound better and cut down lotsa noise. Try this with talkback and you will be surprised at the diff in sound. Just something I picked up along the way 325 |

Yes a RK56 mike will work just fine with the VR9000 I tryed one on the boss's car with her VR9000 and it sounded great but so did the stock mike so she is using the stock mike and i am using the RK56 on my 99V and it works good there also. |

Hammunition In comparing the VR-9000 with the G-88, it all boils down to the fact that there was a cheaper way found to make a Galaxy 88. Jeff, kc0gxz. |
