jyd, something else to think about is that in your mobile, your antenna is much more closer to the mic than when using your base. its like a p.a. speaker and a mic. the closer you are, the louder the squeal. the difference here is rf instead of audio.

using ferrite beads around the mic cord right at the mic connector -may- stop this, if it -is- an rf gnd loop.

Putting the ant. on top of vehicle effectively sheilds radio from RF using bumper or trunk mounts radiates every thing in the vehicle including the radio.Ferrite is a material used in making transformers, such as those in rf amps,RFbeads are little dounut shaped pieces of this material, placing some of these on the mike line of your microphone can block the RF from entering and raising h### with the radios guts, and may even stop squeel.

If the coax from the antenna is long enough to allow it, try coiling the coax in a 3-4" coil about 8-10 turns right before it connects to the radio. Use electrical tape to keep it in a coil. This works well on my 2970. Basically by coiling the coax you are choking off any RF that is on the outside of the shield. This RF will make the radio "hot" and cause a squeal. Coiling the coax will sometimes choke off the RF and solve the problem.

JYD get snap together RF chokes from radio shack, they're made to fit rg8x or mini-8 coax,4or5 ought to do it.They're made from ferrite, put one each on your pos.,neg. cables.
