For all of you big-CB-boys and girls , Go grab a 4 foot flourescent lamp , turn on your amp , put the bulb next to the antenna to get it lit (keyed up) and walk away slowly. Be honest in your measurements as to how far you can walk away and still have the bulb lit (it takes two people). I am at a cool 13 feet! |

Since I'm sure nobody would beleive my measured distance, I tried to videotape it once. The camcorder just ejects the tape. So, 307... Next time you're in the area, would you be willing to be my witness???? BTW: +/- 75 feet. |

How about make the light go out.Every time I key up my big box the lights in my radio room will flicker at low power and go off on high power. |

for a "cool look" I suppose one could fasten a couple of old fluorescent tubes to the antenna mast just below the antenna base...would certainly give the neighbors something to talk about. |

I measured the V/m inside the building and outside near the tower. BIG difference! No way I would picnic near the tower with all the stuff on high power... Inside, it's less than 5.0 V/m. With a 200 foot run of 1 5/8 inch Heliax from the shack to the tower, that gets me far enough away that it's not worrysome. |

Nahh.... Actually, I can get 100 KW out of this rig, but the positive peak modulation goes to heck. I have never measured the mV/m at 100 KW... |

Hey this just hit me the max power my line will support is 44kw ( 440 @ 100 amp ) How in the heck do you power that thing and are you the cause of the western rolling black outs? |

Power is from industrial 440 VAC 3 phase. The big rig's HV supply voltage runs at 25 KV DC. Oh, when the power goes out, the diesel generator can only run the 10 KW rig. Touch lamps??? You mean modulation controlled lamps! Don't have any to try it on. The flourescents inside won't stay on after the wall switch is off though. Not enough RF in the shack. All that insualtion wire over and around the building does a pretty good job. The antennas are a long way from the shack too. |

Wow my power company would love you. We are not allowed in this subdivision because of code to have anything bigger than 440@100 amps Home wireing here is all 220 split so that 110 to center can come in in 2 60 amp circuts. I went through all of the codes people at the last house which had fuses and 4 15 amp drops hell my ft-747 drew enough on the 50 amp supply that if i forgot and kicked on the air POOF went the fuse...... bummer. When i worked in MM wave R&D we wore film badges did you have to get any for the people around you ? |

Flourescent lamps bite the dust yesterday at local Chevrolet dealer.Coon hunter with four wheel drive and 102" whip mounted on tool box on bed rails pulls into dealership for quick service and knocks out six flourescent lamps. |

vernonott My brother had a 6db gain (coliner) mobile antenna on the roof of his VW waggon. We have a bank here that the windows are underground. He pulled in and keep hearing a POW POW sound and like the coon hunter took out several bulbs except for being somewhat bent the antenna suvived |

Another bulb trick: I have a 1 foot flourescent black light bulb hanging by fishing line inside the cover of my 8 tube box. I painted up the transformer, tube sockets and some of the other small parts with flourescent paint. Between the glow of the tubes and the flourescent paint, it makes a nice effect in the shack for visitors. |

I ran across this photo of an antenna system just like mine. Only difference is that I only have 1 instead of 2. http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/images/radiostations/wwvh-large/wwvh5.jpg Is that what you were looking for? I don't want to put any pictures of mine up because it will give away my QTH. I'm sure you can respect that. |

Taz. Mine is fed with 1 5/8 inch Heliax. No, you can't 'feel' when it's on. No, there is no 'shed' or anything like that. The HV power supply is in its own room, but the main cabinets are in the same room of the shop with everything else (workbench, tools, etc.). There are a couple of blowers mounted in the wall behind the rig that pressurize the cabinet. The heated air exits out vents on top to the outside of the room. It's not scary at all. No bangs (usually) or corona discharges. That's only in the movies. |

Hey 715. I didn't see your post until just now. 'BANG' occurs when the 25 KV supply goes to ground in a violent manner, usually without warning. It is usually accompanied by uncontrolled cussing, ears ringing, and skin crawling. It's about like someone sneaking up behind you and shooting a 9mm. I have only had it 'BANG' a couple of times over the last few years. Last time was when it lost an HV supply filter cap (1 of the 3). Hit the plate switch and BANG!!! $2,300.00 later, there have been no more bangs since. |

About BANGS??? I have no idea. If you want to see other shortwave transmitters, do a web search for "shortwave transmitter" +"pictures". I don't have any pictures of mine online. There are a LOT of hams that convert old AM broadcast and shortwave transmitters for use on the ham bands though. Some even work on 11 meters.... Hmmm...... |

Ham/CBer, What tube or tubes or you running 25k plate volts on? |
Hamcber
| Posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 1:38 pm: |

The 25 KV is on the plate of one of the 4CX35000A's. That tube is the switch-mod tube which provides the pulsed (at 70 kc.) plate drive to the other 4CX35000A which acts as the RF final (The rig is Pulse Width Modulated). With dead carrier of 55 KW, the RF final tube sees about 10.5 KV at around 7.5 amps. The PDM drive comes from rectified audio from the radio used as the driver (Icom in this case). The RF drive comes right from the antenna jack of said radio. 2- Oh, and there's 4.5 KV at around 1.2 amps on the 4CX3500 RF driver tube. |

Light the Florescent bulb???? If anyone tells you they can light a F bulb without bringing the bulb to within a couple of inches of the antenna to start it, is telling a fish story. That ranks up there with a truck driver running a XFORCE 8 pill bragging he can change traffic lights when he keys. Getting right up against an antenna radiating 500 watts can't be good for the ole brain tissue. |

OK, I had to go try! Running 400watts unmodulated and a 102"steel whip the bulb (4' 25watt) stayed lit to about 5 feet away. P.S. I've also taken out my share of drive thru bulbs with that whip, and running 500 watts on the base turns my wifes touch lamp off and on...she gets &^#@%* every sunday morning during the net, she says it's hard to read with a strobe light....She gets really nasty..LOL |
