I have a sidewinder that has been modified and I have hooked it up to the klv 351p amp. It seems like I cant get out or Im broken up. Is it possible I am overdriving the radio. I am a greenhorn that has got the radio bug, and I would appreicate any help. I have noticed that there is other people on the forum with the same set up and would like to hear from them. This forum is great! Luckyman sheldonnickels@prodigy.net |

Hmmm , tell me this... 1) How much power are you putting into the amp? 2) Are you running FM , AM or SSB? |

I have the amp hooked up to the battery and I run on AM and LSB switiching back and forth since I travel a long ways to work. I have a Wilson 1000 antenna. I hooked my small amp back up a Bimbo 100 Bilinear and it works but almost every time I transmit I have to keep keying mic to get it to go back to where I can hear. Does this make sense? Luckyman |

Luckyman, Are you saying the radio stays keyed until you click the PPT a few times before it will release so you have receive again? Steve 181 |

Steve that is correct on the small amp. When I use the klv 351 amp, is when I am having trouble being heard or broken up. They can hear me on 3 on the amp, but I come in broken up or not very clear. Its like I do better on the small amp, but the radio stays keyed sometimes. Thanks for your patience Luckyman |

Luckyman, Are you driving the KLV351 with another amp or running the radio right into the KL351? What is the carrier power from your radio going into the amp? Sounding broken up can be a number problems. Attributing this to the fact that your radio stays keyed when you let go of the PTT switch, this could be a mic problem. There could be other issues here, but try another microphone first and see what happens. Steve 181 |

try this may work try at least a 6 foot or 9 foot jumper between the radio and amp. turn the power down in your radio its to high been there done that. make sure your amp and radio are not grounded to a bolt or screw must be to battery maybe a ground loop holding the recieve on. weird but sometimes happens. hey good luck |

I have the problem with a KLV350 staying keyed up after I let off the mic. It only does it with one of two radios. In fact, if I key up, then let off, the amp will stay keyed, then I can disconnect from the radio and the amp stays keyed until I detune it manually or just throw it to standby. With the other radio, it doesn't happen at all. I surmised that the troublesome radio is allowing some rf loop to happen, and it continues after disconnecting the coax because then there is an open lead to the amp input, which perpetuates the loop. I did notice that the offending radio has no cap across the center and shield on the SO-239 connector, unlike the other radio which has a 22pf cap on the antenna connector, and works fine with the amp. Note...the keying problem only appears when the amp is tuned to full output. There must be some internal oscillation between in and out on the amp. Also.. the keying problem only surfaced after I changed the coax length from amp to antenna, eliminating about 8 ft. of excess coax. The reflected appears to be better, but now the keying prob. The system is running at about 1.2:1 now at center frequency. Could this be a tube neutralization problem? |
