I am considering getting a new radio....I have the Cobra 25 NW ST WX.....I would like to either like to upgrade to a higher Cobra without the ST system (or to another brand), and that could be "tuned", or ad a small amp..... I like the radios with the digital fronts, but that isn't a deciding factor.... Any suggestions? Also - does Copper do "Trade In's" on radios? Robbie rkrausen@iglou.com |

Robbie, Cobra makes a good radio (and the 148GTL is the Cadillac of Cobra mobiles) but they are extremely overpriced for what they are. Shop around! You can get a comparably priced rig ($20 - $30 either way) with a lot more bells and whistles, such as the Galaxy 949 or the 959. For all it does, the RCI 2950 DX is a great value for less than $290. This is a good rig to have if you plan on expanding your hobby into the ham realm. The Voyage VR9000 is a great radio too, and you can't beat it for less than $180. Steve 181 |

I'd like to stay under $150 or so if I could....Money is tight right now, seeing as I just got married, and bought a new truck |

Robbie, Isn't it something how when you get married and have two incomes you have less money than when you were single! Under $150? Well there's the Cobra 148, The Ranger TR-296, The Superstar 3900, and The Eagle Sidewinder. For a few $$$ more you can get a Voyage VR9000, the Mirage 2950, or one of the Galaxy rigs. Steve 181 |

The Magnum Delta Force is a reasonably priced "All The Bells And Whistles" export, with killer swing and extras. |

IF you can't find a Sidewinder, there is a clone out there called the Blackhawk. It runs about 110 bucks. You could add a small KL-40 amp and have essentially the same output as a much higher priced rig, full LCD readout, memories, offsets, am/fm/ssb. There is also another clone, the TitanII, same features and output as Sidewinder, about 110 bucks as well. Freq coverage on these radios is 25.615-29.695, but require a small mod to take them from 10m to full export coverage, 4-5w AM/10w FM/12w SSB They are OK radios, good sensitivity, clean output, but not very rugged. I would stick with a good solid Galaxy if I were planning on running mobile. |
