I feel the company EEI AKA Exportradios.com is practicing misleading sales tactics. The company advertises the Silver Streak 250 amplifier as a 250 watt amplifier that performs into the 270 watt range. For $149.00 I jumped on it. The amp was short lived and quickly failed. I took it to an engineer who quickly advised me that the Silver Streak was a 100 watt amp on its best day. I was shown the dual SD-1446 finals and was encouraged to research their performance capabilities. Several companies confirmed that the dual SD-1446 finals in the Silver Streak perform at 50 watts each (100 watts). EEI assured me that all the other companies were wrong and had 1965 educations. EEI claimed that new technology made the SD-1446 finals perform at 180 watts each. IS THIS TRUE? They also casually added that it was 250 watts PEP (an acronym conveniently not on the web page). A kind of "OOOH, its 250 PEP not RMS" (which is VERY questionable sales behavior). I have since learned that PEP (Peak Envelope Power) is quite different than RMS. EEI wants you to think the PEP output is actually the RMS output, which is why the acronyms are in none of the amp adds. RMS reflects the true power rating of an amplifier. I had the finals replaced with MRF-455 finals which are rated at 100 watt performance. So the same amp, with upgraded finals, still only produces 200 watts RMS. This was personally confirmed with a DOSY meter as the radio was keyed in my vehicle on not on some EEI lab 17 volt powersource. This makes me question the output claims of some of the X-Force amps on the EEI, which they quickly encourage me to buy. I dont think so EEI. Please tell me if EEI is misleading the public. |

Magnum Orlando, I am interested in where you found the specs on the SD1446 transistors. Can't find ANY listing for that particular component. The most reasonable match I came across was the 2SD1446, which has a 40W output. The MRF455 transistors, from what I found, are only rated at 60 watts. I am not going to get into whether on not anyone practices misleading advertising. It's in my opinion, a conflict of interest to do it here. We don't want to turn our forum into a p***ing match between other resellers. At any rate, I encourage anyone going to buy an amplifier to check out the rated output of each transistor by reading the specs from the manufacturer of that particular part. NOT by what's painted on the the outside of the amp, or by what it says in an ad. You can more than likely get 125% out of the transistor than its rated output, but thats about IT! You may be able to get the power they claim, but will that piece of equipment last through your next QSO, or for any length of time? Probably not. Poof! Steve 181

Thanks for the responses. I have since met some wonderful people who have assisted me in educating myself and purchasing equipment that performs in the manner advertised. This post was not intended to generate a pi**ing match between resellers. I just hope that I save one person from same experience. Judging by the responses, I see that I am not alone in my opinion of certain sales tactics. As for the performance capabilities of the SD1446 finals, I checked several electronics flyers for radio equipment. The performance levels were rated between 50-70 watts RMS. Thanks to all for your responses. |

Thank god I found Copper, I found EEI first but never found their forum, then came Copper and this forum. I am now the proud owner of a Voyage VR9000 and my only regrets are that I did'nt spend more money and get one of the big boys. Oh well, maybe I'll pass the VR on to one of my buddies for 120.00 and go for a big boy. Metrocat |

Exactly what do you mean by big boy? The VR 9000 will compete in sound quality and distance with almost every radio I own (ie.) Galaxy 77,Galaxy 88,Galaxy 99,Connex 4400HP.The only other radio I run has a built in amp and it would not be fair to the comparison. You now own a top quality radio and in my humble opinion it would make absolutly no sense to sell it , but the retailers really love guys like you and your purchases do keep the good old U.S.A. economy rolling.73's |
