307 : Over the years I've probably utilized the services of over thirty CB shops. Most will let you be present while they are tuning your radio. My question is why do all of my radios put out more on the shop meter than it does on my meter when I get home. The techs always tell me that they are running precision test equipment and that my three Dosy meters are inaccurate even though all three read exactly the same output.I feel like many shops lie so often that they start believing their own fibs.

Want to blow them away??? Ask a few simple questions:

1) What is the voltage output on the Power Supply you are using , Can I see it with a DVM?

2) When was your meter calibrated last and by who?

3) Place my power meter in line where yours was , do not touch the power supply voltage and lets see if they match.

I love the guys that claim they get 50 watts out of a Cobra 29...I play with them all the time till they admit , Hmmm maybe it is wrong?

I love the shop guy who told me his CB meter was more accurate than my recently calibrated IFR service monitor. The IFR is about $10,000 bucks compared to his $50 meter.

I love going to the CB shop. I always feel so much smarter after being there!

Another interesting fact? Certain online resellers will tell you, you have to have a Bird, "The only true accurate reading is with a Bird". "Nope, your meter sucks, gotta use a Bird". Then you ask them if they sell the Bird meters (and yes they are the best meters) and they say "Oh no, they're too expensive to keep in stock, no one will want one anyway". But they will stock an amplifier that's big enough to run an AM broadcast station that costs over $2000!!!. Hmmmm....What are they afraid of you seeing?

It sometimes depends on the load the meter is hooked up to, I have a B&K 1040 testmaster testcenter which i use for setting up my radios it reads a little fatter than my Dosy peak meter which is in my antenna line all the time in my shop. To me it takes more than a watt meter to tune a radio properly. I use a lot of equipment to setup and tune a radio to get the results i am looking for! It also takes me a lot longer time to do it, But it is my hobby and its FUN for me! To me its how the radio sound on the air and how it sounds on receive that counts most to me not if i can squese that last watt out of it so it will run hot and spatter and not last...........
