You could be over driving it on SSB as most radios have a higher output on sideband. Does it run ok on low power on SSB, if so I would use it like that, you won't see that much difference on the other end anyway and it'll probably run cooler. I've seen this before in mobile amps with multiple power settings, one of them would hang the relays for some reason. Sometimes adding a jumper and wattmeter would correct it, which is crazy but I'm old and old school, if something worked I went with it. :-)

WEll your ssb on the radio could be tuned wrong. The other that can go wrong is your switching transistor on the key up circuit could be bad and staying keyed up. One last thing is to much rf is getting back to the box where your antenna is to close to the box. What I would do is is run a ground from the box to the frame of the vehicle. Next run a separate ground from the radio to the frame. Also check to see if the body of the car or truck is grounded well to the frame. I suspect that the radio is mistuned. Most people always set everything wide open. big mistake. I had a radio tuned once ( not going to say who) and when I keyed the radio on ssb it had a steady carrier. So I check it for myself and low and behold everything was turned up wide open. So I tuned the radio myself. Fixed the problem. I will never pay another company to tune for me again.

If the radio in SSB mode is tuned correctly it should work on HIGH as well as low. Over tune SSB will cause this problem. Happen to me when I paid a so called tech to tune the radio before I go it. I had to retune SSB to get to work correctly. I can not tell you the tech location or company I had a friend that listen to me with just the radio on and it sounded so bad he could not tune me in or understand me until I had retune the radio. This is a common mistake that everyone in 11 meter's does. OVER TUNED OVER MODULATED BAD HARMONIC'S.
