Hello all, I have a question on setting the swr with an amp,I was told by an old timer that I should set the swr with the amp on, I was under the impression that the swr was set between the radio and antenna to get the best match possible. So I checked my swr behind the amp with it off an then with it on, here is the results. With amp off (1)=1.1 (20)=1.2 and (40)= 1.1 now with amp on (1)=2 (20)=1.7 and (40)=1.7 radio is a cobra 148 gtl Chinese model an amp is a Texas Star 350HDV antenna is a Wilson 5000 mag mount.with a 3ft jumper from radio to amp. Can someone give some insight on this.

Push in the green "dial a watt" button, make sure the variable knob is turned fully to the right and check SWR again. If still high, have the dead key of the radio turned down and repeat test.

when you do it that way dont forger to re-calibrate ya meter. second swr should not change very much [if any] adding power.now why ya saw a change that could get really techanical. my best guess would be harmonics from amp. but thats my guess. i just use a mfj-259b antenna anylizer. no amp or radio

Does the SWR swing backward with modulation or forward with modulation?
All 7 of my Texas Star amps will swing backward on a Bird RMS Watt meter & SWR Meter on the High Setting.
I usually keep the green button pressed in and hit it with 1.5 Watt dead key and they all swing forward on the Bird and SWR meter.
This is just my experience with my amps.
But With Forward RMS Watts, you're really Better Off !

Looking at those figures, I'd state that you have nothing to worry about.
