Hi, I just replaced my old Firestik Antenna with a new Model: FS5. I have my antenna mounted on a 1978van on the side mirror, it is properly grounded as I have read all of your info on your site . The swr's are low 1.5 and .7 according to my external swr meter ( MICRONTA 21-525B Field Strength Tester and SWR CB Meter), the reading on the internal swr meter on a brand new uniden 980 is a little bit different (I think 1.7 and 1.2 on ch 40 and ch 1 respectively). All the coax was tested for shorts (none) . The problem I am having is intermittent audio on transmit. I have a uniden radio scanner set up at my house recording channel 20 on cb band and I will go for a drive around the block and come back and listen to the recording and it will be cutting in and out using A EC 2018 extreme mic. When i swich to the stock mike the audio is very low but it is not cutting in and out. sounds like a loose connection but it does happen sometimes when the van is not running and standing still. Also even though the audio is in and out I dont have any distance at all past a mile , nothing. Do you have any ideas what it could be , I have had many Firestik Antennas over the years on different vehicles and have never had any problems, this last one I ran for over 16 years with no problems, but I replaced it (with a Model: FS5) because it was the last "old" thing in my setup. Please help. thanks |

welcome to the fourm. ill start ya off.the swr reading on ya radio usualy is juzt ballpark figures at best. if ya already have a external swr meter then just ignore the one on radio.the 2018 mic is a decent mic ya probaly have a loose wire on the pin [audio wire] OR mine eventually ended up with a short in the cord itself. my advice geat a workman 452 mic great little mic and affordable. thats only thing id change dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64 454 [dx numbers] 38lsb

Is it just the audio the cuts in and out? If it is, then it is most likely not going to be the antenna. Suggest possible mic issues or audio amp in the radio. If it is the whole signal, that is the RF cuts in and out too, then we are more than likely looking at coax, mount or antenna issues. 1. Try a borrowed radio and see if the same issue happens. If not, we know that it is not an antenna issue. 2. If it does try a different antenna using both yours and the borrowed radio. 3. If possible try your mics on the borrowed radio and it's mic on yours. The results from these steps will give us more information to work from. Hello Scottish 558 and welcome to the Copper Forum. After you've done all the above suggestions, check your AMC level and set it full open with the stock mic. The AMC VR is labeled, use a non metallic screw driver to adjust it. 73 Pressman
