so i was looking at base mikes and a couple of mobile mikes. one thing i noticed is some are eletric condensor ceramic cartridge crystal cartridge there maybe more but i see these the most.im just curious what the differences are ..if any. any advantage of another?? dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64 454 [dx numbers] 38lsb

Dale - it all depends on the radio really. Radios that are designed to use an condenser mic have a small voltage on the mic wire other wise the mic won't work properly. crystal mics, have a very high impedance and again, won;t work on a radio designed for a lower Independence mic (well at least not well). Cannot recall about ceramic mic, so I"ll hope some one lese will answer on those. At one stage there was even a carbon mic that basically worked like a voice controlled variable resistor. As you spoke the resistance of the carbon granules varied, which in turn changed the current flowing in the circuit. Like the condenser mic, this also needed a device supplied voltage. Most common place to find this mic used to be old rotary dial phones. In short use the type of mic stated in the radios user manual.
