I recently picked up a KL-203 used. The guy I bought it off of bought it used and said they guy he bought it off of said it work. The guy I bought it off of said he never used it. I hooked it up and with a 3 watt DK and a 10-12 watt swing it will only DK about 20 watts and swing about 30 watts. I checked it with two different watt meters both with the same results. Any idea what might be the problem? |

Not sure what would cause it to only swing to 30 watts, but the KL-203 wont last very long with a 3 watt dead key going into it, you need to turn that down to 1-2 watts, Mine with 1 1/2 watt dead key going in and swinging to 15 watts is getting a 45 watt dead key and swinging to 150 watts. |

I just hooked it up to see if it works. I have another radio I'm going to use with it. I don't know if a transistor or two is burned out or what but it is not putting out what it should be. Tonight I will get an audio report on my way home from work to see how the amp is sounding. |

too much carrier for starters. id use a 1 watt carrier,as it dont like high carrier. second ya said tried many different meters which is good but what 1 ya try. some only read rms only you should be using 1 that has a rms setting/pep setting. next is this hooked up in a vehicle or base if vehicle what size of wire going to battery. if base what size of power supply need a alot more info on this one dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64 454 [dx numbers] 38lsb

Dale is correct 1 watt is all that you need for a DK for a 203. I own 3 since 2001. And they all still work like new. They are several post made in the Copper forum about this topic. I run mine with a max of 1 1/2watt DK. Most are set at 1/2-1 watt. The 203 loves that input. Do not listen to what KL tells you about feeding it more than that! It can kill your amp if you do! The amp is is my truck. I over killed all my wiring going to it so that's not a problem. I just got my 148 working and finished the schottky diode mod. I'm going to put that in tomorrow I set the dk at 1.5w I have not looked to see how to increase the swing. SSB is around 15 watts. What should I expect? Also should it be measure in Peak or average? |

I put the 148 in the truck and tested it with my daiwa meter. Am was at around 65w peak on am and around 100w peak on ssb through an antenna I did not test it on my dummy load yet. The meter I was using was an average meter I guess. Thanks for the help and sorry that I didn't check it out completely before I posted the problem. |

ok so wirng is all good .should be getting enough volts to amp. id still lower carrier to just 1 watt ssb i think will be fine but definately not anymore. for measuring swing alwas use pep. for setting carrier use rms dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64 454 [dx numbers] 38lsb
