I want to move my band width higher to get a better SWR into 10 meters do I turn the rings towards the bottom or do I turn them up towards the top. |

i maybe wrong but dont those rings tune the same way a mobile antenna tunes.if so then you,d go down with the rings for 28mhz and go up for 26 mhz i know this is how mobile antennas work ,i thought the a99/imax rings worked the same dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64 454 [dx numbers] 38lsb

so going to the top would actually shorten the antenna which would be the same as a mobile antenna and making the stinger shorter. I just want the part of the 10 meter band up to 28495 that seems to be where the band is more lively when open. I hear a lot of guys talk about cutting the top of the A99 I'm hopping I can get close with just the ring adjustment. |

There's nothing wrong with cutting the top of the A99 to tune it into the 10m band. I ended up cutting close to 12 inches off the top of one and it covers the whole 10m band under 1.2:1 now. It's about 1.7:1 on the CB band. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

and i agree with tech 833 about cutting it. however once ya cut it thats it,cant be put back on. i would use the tuning rings first. then if there maxed out and swr is still not where it needs to be then start cutting. but id only cut 1/8-1/4 inch max at a time dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64 454 [dx numbers] 38lsb

Dale- Valid point. Keep in mind that the A99 has a very wide bandwidth, so if you run the rings all the way up, then begin cutting and accidentally go "too far", you can always run the rings back down to regain lower resonance. Also, there is no magic to the A99 top section, one could easily replace it with a stainless whip (cut to length of course) or a cut down Firestik mobile antenna, or whatever. You should have no fear about trimming an A99 top section. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

Or you could buy the GPK and have a replacement with 3 spares. As they are the same as the top section. Just a thought. George KI4NBE
