Hi Folks:

I bought one of Copper's refurbed Galaxy 979s, after doing some internet reading which seemed to indicate that it could be modified to put out up to 30 watts or so.

The radio arrived, and the same day took it to a local CB shop and asked them to "Peak and Tune" the radio. I THOUGHT this meant that they would increase the power output to that 30 watts.

But A) Tech808 posted on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 4:26 pm that "The Peak & Tune will be setting everything to Factory Specifications." and B) Though I am an amateur with a old, cheap Pyramid III swr/power meter, it sure doesn't look like the radio puts out more than 4 watts on AM, nor more than 12 watts at peak on SSB.

Was this simply a case that I used a term that I thought I understood, but really means something different? If so, why wouldn't a tech look at me holding a new in box Galaxy 979 and say "Are you sure? I think the factory would have set that thing to factory specifications." And what did he do? Throw the box on the bench then hand it back to me the next day after I paid him?

Hopefully one of you guys can set a newbie straight!

Thanks!

AGreyMan you used the right words. You just used the wrong radio Tech. You also could've got Coppers to do it! Or looked to the left under "Tools" Modification List and found what adjustments you need to do.

Aftermarket factory spec tune is usually closer than factory. Some shops won't tune beyond legal and some will.
Under Tools on your Copper forum screen look in the Modification List and enter your 979, it'll give you the VRs to adjust for power and Modulation. Don't go too high on SSB, it may worble. There's not that much differance between 20 and 30 watts SSB to those hearing you. If you're at 12w and you turn it up to 25w, that's only 3db. Don't go over 2w LO and 4w HI for AM in case the biasing won't take it. if you run an amp, you don't want the radio hitting it too hard. Those 979s are usually loud radios anyway.

Some CB shops are crooks. And really can't do much with peaking a CB radio. That's why most of the Copper members learn to do their own. Or at least ask how to do it!

From what I understand a Peak and Tune (I maybe Wrong) is when the radios AM/SSB Power is Peaked to the Maximum output power, Tuning the audio so its load and clear, And tuning and aligning the Receive. This is without modding the Radio in anyway (Adding or taking out anything) But again I maybe Wrong.

If a radio shop tuned your radio and it meets or exceeds manufacturer's specs, they did not cheat you.

Did they provide any documentation showing the specs and where your radio performance lies within them?

Thanks for the info, guys. I guess sometimes being a newbie has it's costs!

Tech833, there was no documentation at all.

As I read more on Copper's forums, the more I am leaning toward a RM amplifier. At least I know the radio's in factory specs, right?

One more question: With the radio hooked up to the Pyramid III power/swr meter and set on AM, I key the mic ("dead key"?) and I get 4 watts. When I talk into it, the needle doesn't budge. Should I be able to see the needle move when I am talking into it? I certainly can on the SSB mode.

Thanks again, guys!

That's an average reading meter. No movement at all while modulating on AM is normal. If it moves backwards when talking, your radio has a problem.
