Just use the center conducter only on the coax. leave the shield unhooked. Have done this myself, works quite well.

Yes, good advice from N8FGB.

Your A99 will work well on the 20 through 10 meter bands. Below 20m it is extremely deaf. You'd be MUCH better running a longwire. It's the most simple antenna in the world to make, just run a piece of wire from the receiver out a window or hole in the wall and run the other end to something else. Keep it as high as possible and away from as much stuff as possible. They work excellent.

The longer you make it, the better it works on lower frequencies. Keep it under 200 feet long though. Anything from 30 to 120 feet seems to be about ideal.

This is why ASK THE TECH section is so cool! Thank you Tech833! There is so much bad info out there, it is nice to get info from someone who knows there stuff! I am going to run a longwire as i want to cover all the frequencies.I was thinking maybe i could get away with just my A99 for SWL, but i am going to climb up on the roof and string a proper longwire. Take care!

Just my 5 cents worth.
My nephew lives in a deed restricted neighborhood with a HOA that gripes about crooked real estate signs. Anyway we ran a length of 12ga black wire to his second floor roof drip flashing. Attached it with a screw and went next to the screw and sawed a gap in the flashing and resealed it. Talk about reception!

I did this once for a friend to have CB in his house, we measured 1/2 wave and sawed both ends then sawed the middle attaching the shield to one side and the center conducter to the other side, resealed all three places and he was on the air. His HOA never did find the antenna! If you do this on the peak of the roof you have an inverted V. Sure beats an antenna in the rafters.

For receive only you could also try just running a lopp of wire around the celing of the radio room.
