I am looking for 2200-3000 volts at 1.8 amps MAX 1 amp will do just not leave any head room.It would be nice if it had a 12-13 volt tap 7amps. I am currently thinking about useing 2 transformer's from AMeritron/MFJ that run about $74 each..... Using the Amertron transformer's would get me into the ball park I need to be in.... Actually it would give me more voltage and current then I need but the other models put me too low either in voltage or amperage and would reguire me to still use two transformer's one for the plate and one for filament. The ones I am looking at are in the $74 range so two of them is not that bad. Since the filament transformer is about $40 it would only save me $30 if I could find a transformer that had 1000-2500 volts at 1.2 amps. So I am trying to stay under $150 for either two transformer's or one massive one.I am open to suggestions other then MFJ/Amertron so long as I can source it in the USA and it is close to my price window. The tubes I am useing are Russian GI-7BT tubes. I got them for $19.95 each or $27.80 each after you toss in shipping. I bought 5 of them two for the HF rig 2 for spare's and one for a dedicated 6 meter rig. I have the schematic for the Henry 2KVD and am strongly considering coping it's tuning circuits for each band so I will have a truly broad band HF linear with a q of 2 or better. It used separate tuning coils for each band controlled by ceramic multi-pole switch plate.I think that is low cost and more durable then most costly means of doing it. It will take up more space in the chassis though. I am slowly accumulating the parts door knop caps, HV zener diode, the tubes are in mail....I have been looking on the internet for transformers and it is the hardest part to find! SO any help would be appreciated!!!Google has not been my friend on this!!I am trying to not use variable vacuum cap's due to their cost and the amount of space they eat up in a chassis. |

With the cost of copper going sky high again, used transformers are more scarce. I have had radio site burglarized, and the theives literally cut the transformers out of equipment and stole them, leaving behind things like computers, tubes, etc. These days, when you do find a used transformer, get ready to pay what it might cost new. Oh I had my number's mixed up.....$74 was for the filiment transformer's. I did not have my reading glass's on and must of looked at the line bellow the specification line I was looking at. Sorry for that it happens the more and more the older I get.....If I can not put my finger on the line and run it across I sometimes get off by one line. Wow, Thieves knowing that the transformer's are full of copper wire is scary.....I normally associate copper thieves with idiots. That is a shame too because I have lost my house, sold two 4x4's and 5 rifles to try to keep my home and pay debts......I would not stoop to stealing to pay the bill's! Would I steal a loaf of bread to feed my kids sure if it came to that but not stealing merchandise to resell to pay the bill's....That is an all together different all of wax....That is like selling drugs to pay the bills. A long time ago in Flight School some guys offered me and my then roomate a lot of money to fly drugs....Both of us told them to take a hike because we where not interested! It would have been fast, easy money.....It is shame that so many turn to crime so easily! I did not figure it would be cheap but since I can buy parts piece mill and I get to do it as a labor of love for my son it makes it more fun. Plus I could not afford to spend $1500 to $3900 lump sum for an amplifier. $100 here and $200 their $50 their and before you know it you have 700 watt AM amp and 1000 watt SSB amp. The best part is it will refresh all those skills and theory I learned 20 years ago.....LOL If I do a nice job who know's I might even be able to sell a few? LOL Not my plan but never know. |

Your excellent point reminds me of an old Benny Hill gag. Benny approaches a beautiful single young lady and asks her if she would lay with him for a million dollars. She enthusiastically says, "Yes!" Then, Benny asks if she would lay with him for 10 dollars, she gets a sour look on her face and says, "No way! What kind of girl do you think I am?" Benny says, "We've already established what you are. Now, we're just negotiating your price!" My apologies for breaking character and sharing frivolous humor. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

No it was funny I enjoyed it. I recently lost my second youngest Uncle. He was an electrician on Nuclear ships and sub's in the Navy. I was about 6 years old when he was 17....He used to let me watch Benny Hill with him.So your story brought back a bunch of fond memories for me and put a smile on my face!!!LOL I am slowly getting quotes from transformer companies.....Peter Dahl was insanely high.....For a transformer I can buy for $247 from one company they wanted $584 dollars. It is a good thing it was an email quote and not a live quote over the phone or I might of laughed at them over the phone! I have also looked at using two microwave transformer's. Actually I am thinking of using 4 of them 4 ran parallels in pairs then in series. This would give me more volts and amps then I need but would also leave room to upgrade latter on. |

Dahl transformers cost so much because they are built like tanks. I have purchased many of them over the years for various broadcast related jobs, and they are the best available. If you don't need broadcast reliability, then a less expensive option is probably a better choice. If you don't want your station going off the air, then you pay the Dahl prices and be happy.
