I have the Ranger 6900f150. Works great and gets good reports. On SSB I have noticed that the power meter pegs on transmit and does not move back and forth with my voice. Is this a final that is going or gone bad?? It was checked on a meter by a tech and he said the power was not bleeding off as fast as it should. Almost like it had a carrier.
Is this a small problem getting ready to turn into a big one or just a quirk of an over tuned radio?? Thanks, 524 |

I would check the adjustment on the TX meter first. Then if your radio has an ssb carrier balance adjustment I would inspect that to see if it's adjusted properly. Also checking the bias wouldn't be a bad idea to.
Most of the time when you peak a radio you need to recalibrate your TX meter so it doesn't slam the end of the S meter scale.
When you are in ssb mode and not speaking into the mic, your meter should not even lift up until you speak. If your meter does move all the way to the end when keyed up in ssb with no modulation then you possibly have some kind of RF oscillation problem going on, or just a miss adjusted carrier balance on ssb.
I really don't think your final is going bad if the watt meter displays normal power on am & ssb.

Update. I finally decided I had purchased a faulty used Wilson 5000. So I bought a new one. The radio now acts as it should, meter reading properly and the finals don't get so hot either. Getting great reports so far. Thanks for the help. TimeNXS |
