Im buying a RCI 2970n2 and want to know how big of a power supply i need to run this rig as a base station ?

a 20amp should but a 35amp would run it nicer

--Hi, NottieKat. If it were me, I would get a power supply that is larger than what you need, that way, there is leeway in case you ever want to add equipment later. According to the Ranger website, the 2970N2 draws 32 amps at its highest output setting. More than likely, you will not be running that radio at its full output power all the time, which would require at least a 32 amp power supply to handle the peaks, but I would get at least a power supply that will handle 32 amps continuously, though. If you cannot afford the extra cost of the bigger power supplies, no worries. Just save up until you get that extra money, because you will regret not buying the larger one now.
--If you go with the Tripp Lite brand of power supplies sold here at Copper Electronics, your best bet would be to purchase the Tripp Lite 40, which is 32 amps continuous and 40 amps surge. Or, for just around $35 more, get the Tripp Lite 50, which is 40 amps continuous and 50 amps surge. Like I said earlier, it's better to have a bit more room to grow with a power supply.
--With all that above said, I used to run a Yaesu FT-100 for years on an Astron RS-20A. The radio draws a maximum of 22 amps, but the power supply was only 16 amps continuous, 20 amps surge. I got around the slightly smallish power supply problem output by running the radio at 1/2 and 3/4 power. It made the radio happier by not always transmitting at full power. |

i would get a 30 amp minimum. 40 amp if its in your budget

rci 2970n2 board number EPT695015A
GARBLED ssb tx modulation.. Voltage does not increase when switched from AM to ssb so i think
it is not switching all the way to ssb and is modulating in both modes.. Cant remember which trannies are involved.
Can anyone help??

Perhaps the radio is not tuned properly. If you can not find anyone to tune it properly send it back to RCI. They can tune it right or fix anything if there is any other problem. I have never had any trouble with the DX radio's or the 2970n2 |

This radio is properly tuned to the rci specs
I know Chip at rci very well and have had their radios for many years. If you have never had problems with dx radios then you have never used one. Everyone I know here has had serious problems with the n2. Have had this same problem before but forgot which tranny was the switching one from am to ssb. plus the voltage not changing from am to ssb is probably a separate problem.

I have had every DX radio RCI had produced. I have a 2950dx in one truck, a 2970n2 in another. I have a 2985 dx and a 2995dx. The radio's I have are still working and some are not made any more. I have been a radio operator for more than 45 year's and also a ham operator. So to answer you, I have plenty of DX radio's I hope you find your trouble with your radio soon. Have a blessed day. |
