I'm looking at ordering an Imax 2000 and was wondering what kind of difference it will make if I replace the top of the antenna with a 102 in. steel whip? I have heard people talk about it and was wondering if it would be worth making the change. Thanks |

No difference. The fiberglass top section is a 102 inch fiberglass whip. Inside is metal (copper wire). Pretty much same difference to the RF. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

I don't know how accurate it is, nor have I tried it yet, but I have heard many hams mention about the imax and the a99 with the gpk kits installed but replacing the elements on the kit with the 102" steel whips since they was using tuners and some even replaced the top element with the 102" steel whip and had great success from 10-80 meters, however as I have mentioned, I have not tried this and can not at the moment verify 100% truth of it. If it is true and works that well, would solve a lot of hf issues for hams that are in antenna constricted areas. |

Like I said, replacing the top section with a steel whip= No difference. Replacing the 60" radials in the GPK with 8-foot steel (or fiberglass) whips would make a slight improvement. And, I do mean SLIGHT. Most would never notice. Nothing you modify will make the Imax 2000 work well at 40 or 80m. That is a fact. Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998
