That looks like a newer version of the older style model of a Palomar. They are good amps, BUT, they do splatter pretty bad though, so keep that in mind. Radio Tech since 1987!

I've got a Thunderbolt 305 that looks just like your Spitfire. Mine has 1 driving 3, all 6LQ6's. They are nice amps for their size. The small control on down toward the bottom that is labeled "power" works like a variable power. You should turn it fully clockwise while tuning. After peaking the other three controls, you can turn the power control counterclockwise to lower the output. It works by lowering the voltage to the driver tube. I will upload a picture of my Thunderbolt. Scrapiron |

Well that depends on how hard you drive it and how long you want it to last. When I use mine, which is not very often, I set it up to key about 125 watts and it swings 300+. It runs nice like that. Of course you will see 4 tube amps with claims of 600+ watts. I saw a similar amp the other day on the auction site that he was calling a KW amplifier. And it sold for a ridiculous high price. He should have sold his meter with it.lol These old amps were made in the early 1970's, that was before the high output radios so they don't like a big input. A radio that keys 2-3 watts with 10-15 watts swing will drive them well. |
