I need some help with a galaxy 949. recently we had some severe weather and while in bed i heard somthing make a very odd sound got up looked around could not find the source. the next day tured on my power supply put my radio on chanel 19, i heard static but when i keyed it up an asked for a break it talked thought the talkback but would not even shake my dosy meter. I tried my other radios and they worked fine, now i thank the racket i heard was maybe lighting hiting my radio, i replaced the final but no change, i have a old cobra 29 hooked up on the bench with a set of earphones hooked in it with no ant. i can hear the radio on it but not very strong, what could be the problem.
thanks fieldrat

Was the sound a "snap, snap, snap" sound?

If so, sounds like static charge, not lightning strike. A Polyphaser would have prevented that. Available right here at Copper.

I am in the habit of "unhooking" my coax any time I am not in the operators chair. It is a bit time consuming, but in the end the knowing your station is disconnected while you are at work and there is a lightning storm in the area is comforting. I have two 12" x 12" carboard signs that say "coax is disconnected". They are standing up against both radio stations (two seperate stations) when I am unhooked, so that I don't transmit when the antennas are disconnected. Get into the habit and it will be like breathing, you will just do it.

Disconnecting is a good idea, but a Polyphaser saves you the trouble. As an added benefit, you can continue to operate, even when stormy.

Without seeing the radio, I cannot tell if it is parts or not. Most likely, some static built up enough to arc over somewhere in the radio. No telling where. You could contact the Galaxy repair center (is there one?) and tell them what happened. They may just have you send it in for a look.

I have been looking into this and right now a lot of guy's at my college in Electronic Major's are purchasing Chinese Digital O-Scopes. You can get a really nice scope in the $239-$500 range that will do more then what $4000 models from 10 years ago can do. Some of them can be had with Battery power so that you can unplug them stick them in your brief case and take it out into the field.

So far 75% of the reviews I have read from people finishing up school have been positive. They all say the same thing sure it is not built as well as an American or German made unit but they have better user interface, if you have to scroll the screen they move smoothly instead of jerky like the American models and they cost about 1/3 the price of something made in America or Europe for the same capacity. Most of them also have the digital capture and USB support for storage to a Flash drive. I guess a lot of the more expensive but American models that are intended for students even they cost 2-3 times as much do not have the USB port for capture of data.I sold a nice vintage US Airforce Surplus Tektronix 15 years ago when I went off to college that I wish I still had. But since I need a new scope for all the project's I have planed and am on a budget I am considering all kinds of non-traditional name brands!

If all you need is something to see the modulation pattern and voltages int he radio though you could get a Station Monitor. Kenwood, HeathKit, and all you major Amateur brands sold them for years. They turn up on ebay when an Elmer dies usually in like new condition for about $50. They are not going to do all the stuff a real Scope will do but you can do an alignment on your radio is you add an attenuator and a signal generator and a meter.

MIssie, checkout the Rigols... They're cheap, and the base 50Mhz model can be upgraded through software to the 100Mhz model.

Nice scopes. Will give any Tektronics scope a run for the money. You can find them on amazon for $355, new.
