I notice on my 11 meter radio that it is quiet as a mouse from very early in the morning until about 10:00 in the morning when this elecrical frying just starts up. On some frequencies it is in the red, practically unuseable. Luckily, it is not that bad on 27.385. Obviously, one would think this is a powerline, but if so, why wouldn't it just fry all the time? What do you think this is? |

Turn them off one by one while monitoring a particularly noisy frequency to see which one(s) are your worst offender(s). Your radio 'Mythbuster' since 1998

TECH 833, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BUT THE SOLUTION IS NONE OF THE ABOVE THAT HAD BEEN MENTION. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN IT IS DRY CONDITION'S I HAVE SOME VERY BAD FRYING. NOW, WHEN IT RAIN'S THE FRYING STOP'S. IN A DRAINAGE DITCH 100 FOOT LONG, I HAVE SEVEN GROUND ROD'S COVERED BY DIRT WITH THE CABLE THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE RADIO. ( I DID THIS TO MAKE SURE I HAVE A GOOD EARTH GROUND EVEN WHEN IT IS AT THE DRIEST) I ALSO HAVE A GROUND ROD CONNECTED AT THE ANTENNA 500 FOOT ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN WHERE THE ANTENNA IS. I KNOW THE FRYING IS FROM THE ANTENNA OR COAX BECAUSE WHEN I DISCONNECT IT THE FRYING STOP'S. WHAT ELSE DO YOU SUGGEST? HAVE YOU EVER HAD A PROBLEM LIKE THIS? |

Tech 237, THANK'S. I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT BECAUSE I HAD THOUGHT THAT OUR LOCAL ELECTRIC COMPANY WOULD BE ON TOP OF THING'S. NOW, MY PROBLEM IS TO CONVINCE THEM THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM AND GETTING THEM TO FIX IT. THE WAY IT IS AROUND HERE I HAVE AS GOOD A CHANCE OF GETTING THIS DONE AS I WOULD TALKING WITH THE QUEEN. TECH 237, THANK'S ONCE AGAIN. THE PEOPLE AND THE TECH'S HERE ARE GREAT WHEN GIVING US A HELPING HAND. |

easiest way to trace it is using an old AM transistor to locate the culpret. Most AM radios have a slight directional tendency. use this to pin down the pole (the noise is loudest). Take note of the number on the pole before contacting them. Take a look at ARRL RFI manuals for better description. Tech237 N7AUS God only made some many perfect head, on the rest he put hair.

Tech 237, THAT I WILL DO. BUT, HERE WHERE I LIVE ONE CAN NOT EVEN GET THE POWER COMPANY TO CUT A TREE THAT IS READY TO FALL OR TOUCHING A POWER LINE. TO GET ANYTHING DONE WE HAVE TO FILE A CASE WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL. THEY DO NOT LIKE TO FIX THEIR PROBLEM'S NOR HAVE ANYONE TELL OR COMPLAIN ABOUT THEIR PROBLEM'S THAT IS THEIR FAULT AND NEED TO FIX. TECH 237, I WILL CONTINUE TO TRY TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. ONCE AGAIN THANK.S VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND HELP. |

Hi guys; A few years back I had a problem with a power transformer a couple of houses up the hill and a few others around the neighborhood. I called the power company and got laughed at. Then I got into action, I checked everything in the shack and all was OK. Had four ground rods so I checked all the connections at them, they were fine. I called the power company again and still got a non compliance answer. Next---I got some of the guys from the local Ham club to come over and they found nothing at my station. Then I filed a complaint with the Tampa Field Office of the FCC. A few days went by and a lineman knocked on my door. He had me walk around with him and show him the noise with a pocket radio. He fixed the ground on 14 transformers in the neighborhood and replaced the transformer two doors up. I got thanks from the neighbors for clearing up their cable. Go figure ! Wally/Pressman/KC4ZWM
