Iam looking for any advice on where to mount my rig in this van. I need to be able to see and use all front panel functions from the drivers seat. The best place I could see is to mount over the cup holder location. It is very solid and sturdy, but than one can't use his cupholders. I really need my cupholders, but I don't want to mount the radio where its not user friendly.

I mounted my rig right under the overhead light counsel. It is within easy reach and all you have to do is look up just little an to the right. I ran the wires right along windshield to post an down the post to where they needed to go. clean looking and practical. Hope that helps. I am also from the Great Lakes

That location depends on your height.

As I mentioned in my install article, during some crashes in race cars I have seen paint from my helmet on places that I couldn't reach normally. An overhead shelf like that is a place that you just may reach in a panic stop or if somebody hits you.before you bolt to it, make doubly sure it's not close enough to hit.

Some of the places my helmet swapped paint with were a foot away during normal driving, yet I hit them DESPITE full harness belts that were tight enough to leave red marks before and accidents.

Tech 237, I agree 100%! Usually in the full size van the overhead light counsel is in the middle between the driver an passenger seat. Plus it is usually only inches from the windshield, just depends on what factory installed it.

I drive a chevy G20 van myself and understand your situation very much so. If you look in my pics section I think you can see my setup. I used a large heavy carpeted subwoofer box to mount my radio and amp and placed it in the center between the 2 front seats. Best thing I like about it is that all the extra slack of wires are nice and neat inside the box. Removal is simple just unhook the coax and power wires and have an extra man help lug the 60lb box away.
