On my Toyota Prius I have a clamp on mount that mounts on hatchback with ground wires running from it to attach to screws or bolts that thread to the metal of the car in the hatchback part. I'm running a Yaesu FT-857D on all bands with detachable face and using the Yaesu screwdriver antenna that adjusts itself with the touch of a button. It will work 40 thru 44o mhz. I do use a separate comet NMB-5 for 2 meters and 440 mhz. It get me by. Right now, no real conditions. |

CB: Galaxy 959 Ham: FT-857 102" SS whip w/ spring and quick disconnect on a custom mount. Fed through a SGC-237 auto-tuner. Mounted on right, rear corner of Chevy Trailblazer, above the tail light assembly. Puts the antenna fairly high on the body so trees and low bridges can be a problem. But the combo seems to work well enough. Obviously most efficient on bands where the whip is closer to being resonant without the tuner's help. However, I have used it 0n 75/80 with reasonable success on < 100watts cross country and transatlantic. Likely mother nature helping there rather than a real efficient setup. But it keeps me happy. |

Yea, this is an ancient thread as the internet goes anyway... but I thought I'd chime in anyway. I know CB's have been pretty much replaced by cell phones, but some of us still tinker with the old things... I built professional broadcast antennas for the last 3 decades, so it's safe to say I have a wee-bit of knowledge on the subject. We didn't build the small stuff like house or vehicle antennas, but a lot of the tech is similar. I have always had a pickup and typically mounted my antenna under the hood's edge, or front bumper. I've always mounted them solid and never a mag-mount. I'm sure some mag mounts are OK, but I've never had much luck with them. Most have grounding problems from what I understand. The make/model of vehicle is irrelevant as I've mounted in the same spot from 1970's rigs to mid-2000's... A CB antenna needs that large mass of metal under or around it called a ground plane, so unless your rig's body is fiberglass - I don't think the type and make of vehicle matters. I prefer a minimum 4-ft fiberglass antenna that is TUNE-ABLE... do not bother with any antenna that can't be tuned. They are a waste of time in my humble opinion. While they can be tuned by the "snip snip snip" method, trust me when I say... waste of time! And once you've neutered your antenna, there's no going back if you needed to. Thus the reason to stick with one that can be tuned. I've ran Firestik's, K40's, and a few others along the way, but I can't remember thier names. I've nuked several K40's with a relatively small amp, so I don't bother with them anymore. I stick with Firestik's 5/8 waves. I have yet to burn one down and they've always broad-banded well for me across the B,C and D bands. I also use GOOD QUALITY coax, such as Belden Mini-8. As you've probably read somewhere... do not bother with Radio Shack coax. It's cheap garbage. You're probably better off using a coat hanger than that stuff!.. lol. Take one look at the shielding.. it's extremely thin. Also pay attention to the insulation. You'd be surprised how much of that cheap stuff draws in water and shorts things out. As professional antennas go... I've seen top-notch coax from standard RG58 to 3" Heliax. The stuff that cost more per foot than you can imagine. I can talk up a storm on coax alone... Bottom line is, buy the best you can afford; otherwise that huge radio and kicker will sound like an old Pace 123A hooked to a screen door and last about as long! Also, I use ONLY the type of antenna mount/stud that has the PL-259 connector. Don't bother with the stud that you have to put a ring-connector on it. While they will work, they will usually break along the way, or suck in water and short out. I've seen this happen many times, so trust me when I say... use only the mount/stud that has the threaded PL-259 on it, and buy coax that already has the ends installed (or install the connector yourself so long as you seal it properly). Yes, there is a right and wrong way to install the PL-259! So unless you have big enough soldering equipment and know what you're doing... just pay the few extra bucks for pre-made coax and save yourself tons of headaches. Do you run dual antennas on smaller trucks? Did it tune right? You need to get at least 1/4 wavelength between them. That's around 9 feet at 27 MHz. I get a kick out of pickup trucks that have dual antennas. It's doubtful you can achieve 1/4 wavelength across a standard cab, unless of course they are putting one on the front bumper and the other on the back bumper.. LOL. Maybe with big mirror mounts? Maybe... Big-Rigs can get away with this because they have more distance across thier cabs. And that creates a sort of beam affect. It works well for them as they mainly talk to other trucks in front or behind them. If you managed to get this affect on a smaller pickup... you're lucky, but it's my guess the dually antennas aren't performing any better than a single one. Whew... I rattled on enough... slow night I guess.... Cheers! |

Shakymcquiver - I have used Radio shack coax with a good result - when terminated in a 50 Ohm resistor and used as a long leaky wire antenna on a 2m hidden transmitter -lol. Tech237 N7AUS God made me an athiest, who are you to question his wisdom?
