HOW do I get rid of white noise in my Uniden PC 68 Elite? It is a good radio especially with weather bands and orange background on lights at night. But the white noise is just plain HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks. Keith in Atlanta CEF 150 |

Make sure everything is ground good. Are you using it base or mobile? Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realizing life is made up of little things.

what george said....then-is the noise just the loud SHHHHHHHH, with little if any signal strength, or is there 'carrier' received with it? how many S-units? does the noise/carrier level change during different times of the day? does it change with engine running/off (if mobile)? does it change with vehicle in different location (if mobile)? does it change with coax removed from radio? one possibility is chassis ground (radio's, not vehicle's). poor ground connection between radio & itself-the chassis-causing 'static'. the 68 is the same as a cobra 25, the 78 is the same as a cobra 29. been a long time since i've touched an AM-only CB, but don't really remember the 25 being all that noisy. my late magnum 257 was possibly the WORST white noise offender i've ever seen, definitely the worst i ever owned for more then 15 minutes! base.....EXCELLENT. mobile....away from civilization.....EXCELLENT. anyplace NEAR something electrical, while mobile, S-9+ noise level & you HEARD NOTHING BUT SHHHHHHH noise. i just picked up an HTX10 rat shack cousin to the 257. as quiet as my XL in the mobile..... |

After several cars and pickups, it is the radio. I hear what you said above, the shhhhhhhhhhhhhh racket, and after you turn back RF gain 1/2 way, that is the only way to get rid of some of it. And when you receive the signal, the sound coming through is not good either. It doesn't matter if I use the installed speaker or use one of several external speakers. The sound does not change. This is the second one of these radios that I have. I like the orange background, the weather bands for my NOAA Storm Spotter activites, but for radio receive, it is just lousy with white noise. The transmitt is just fine according to everyone I talk with. Remember guys, most of my time is driving on interstates on business. So if there is something to tell my Tech guy, let me know. I have not discussed with him yet anyway. Thanks for the help. If I could take the weather bands and put them in my old Uniden PC 66, then I would have the best of both worlds. It is still one of the best little radios that I have ever had. Keith in Atlanta CEF 150 |
