Wish me luck, I will walk into Columbia University Ham club on Dec. 21 with no a mature license and leave with an EXTRA class, I plan to take all three elements and Have the Extra ticket,I am ready ~ %90 Average on all online practice test sites I will be legal as soon as its displayed or posted on the FCC Site (10 ~14 days). Wasn't there a time when a Novice ticket was needed for 1~2 years prior to even be tested for advancement examining for higher class tickets. Am Ample, Gonna pick up An Icom IC-7000 at $1300. I want to explore UHF and VHS for EME, Scatter propagation, rare skip. is this a good radio for the price
Please tell me before I buy a stinker, online reviews are good or are there better for comparable (+ 200~300) price.
Wish me Luck,

Thanks. Joe

I feel, if I am schlep myself to the NYC from Long Island. I might as well go all the way with the Extra. It's like when I get to do my drinking, I don't like to do things half-way.
Thank for the words of encouragement

Joe

if you're ready NOW, why don't you go to huntington NEXT weekend? there's a session in the village, right on 25A in the h'ton town hall. check the arrl website, i believe 12/5, 9 AM. that's where i took my tech test some years back. there's also a session on 12/8 at briarcliffe college on stewart ave in bethpage. you must contact the VE in advance, however.
as for the ic7000, GO FOR IT. i've loved every icom i've ever owned, & i'd love to replace my 706mk2g for the mobile with a 7000.

I was going to kill three birds with one stone.
Take the day off, take LIRR into city, bring my 19 year old son along (quality bonding time) and get some last minute X-Mas shopping done before and/or after exam. The more I read about the 7000, the more I like it. The VHF and UHF capabilities will allow me to experiment with EME, meteor scatter and satellite work.
BTW, thanks for the Moxon idea.

I took did all elements at once.
Tech and general was no problem.
The extra class took a bit more time that is for sure.
Good luck!

I have to agree with you, crackshot. It took about two days of study to consistently score 90 or more for technician, three days or so for general. But after a month plus, I am not as confident with the extra element. Got another three weeks though, so I will be good. Thanks, everybody, for the words of encouragement.

If you don't get it on the first time for extra, at least you will be general and that opens up a lot of HF fun! :-)

Like I said, its the 26th of December and I now have a Extra ticket. Matter of fact, I scored 35/35, 35/35. and 50/50. One of the administrating VEs called it a 'Hat Trick'.
It was funny though, when I walked in late ( the subway way a mad house scene) I knew they were all thinking 'what the heck is this Mo Mo doing here, it doesn't look like the low life could pass an eye test.
First off I don't exactly look like an academic, I look more like the guy who would 'stick up' an academic. I am educated w/ a BS in electrical Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science, but I sure don't look the part. I was born in Brooklyn, I came up running with a tough, no joke sort of crew; the streets and subways were our stomping ground. Plus, I was wearing my very worn Carhartt work jacket and a beat up camo METs ball cap, backwards no less.
I did not start my undergrad work until I was 26, and my then brand-new bride forbade me in hanging out with that low-life crew I called friends. God bless that women, most of those people are now either incarcerated upstate, whereabouts unknown or dead from ODs.
The VE's learned a lesson that night, 'Don't judge a book' and all that.

Anywho, thanks to all for the words of encouragement.

Be good,
Joe Miglino
