Hey now, I was looking for some patch length coax pieces in a electronics junk draw recently and found an old "Typhoon 150" solid state amp. I decided to hook it up to an old modified cobra 138XLR to see if it worked. When I keyed up, the Typhoon bled RF into everything - VOIP phone, cable TV, the cable modem and router - it even tripped all the zone relays in my Toro automatic sprinkler timer I have in close proximity in my basement shack. It even reset the time and the day of the Toro timer. Is there something wrong with this thing or is the 'normal' unclean RF thrown out in the operation of this thing? Can I do anything to curb this unclean stray RF? I am sure it would bleed into the neighbors' electronics so the only decent neighborly thing I can do is to fire it up at like 4 in the morning or use it in the mobile. No telling what it might do to the auto computer. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Joe Migs |

150? i have had FAR more then that(maybe 30 TIMES more) keyed up in my driveway, less then 15' from a TV & it only came through the speakers. heck, i can do 2kw 15' from the TV & not even fuzz the picture. and that is NOT with a quality ham amp either, but class 'c' cb shtuff. i can't duplicate that amount of interference with anywhere NEAR 150 watts. even TRYING. i had all the old telco's-storm, typhoon, hurricane, whirlwind, tsunami, never noticed anything out of the ordinary with any of them. i would say it's a combination of problems multiplying themselves. i would try it on a 'stock', un-'cranked' radio as well as checking the jumpers 1st. |

I have read a number of your posts and either you know a great deal or you are a great BS'er. I am going to go with the former. So you think maybe the shielding on some of my patch RG-8 may be bad, leaking RF into the everything. Makes sense, I am going to dope out the jumpers and try running barefoot. Thank you Joe |

no no no.....big time BSer.....afraid to talk into a microphone. don't even own a cb, the only thing i have to do with 'ham' is eat them. linear? that's the process of being 'in line'. shielding? king arthur's knights did that so they wouldn't get lanced by somebody elses knights. actually, i think there is far too much rfi you are experiencing with just 150 watts. you said the 138 is modded....depending on what was done to it, compunded by bad jumpers, and compounded again by an amp that may have had hands inside it....is about the only way to get 150 watts to give that much trouble. well, add on high swr & other antenna issues as well as no grounding to anything hooked to house AC....i still don't see that much trouble with 150 watts....start with the radio, go to jumpers & work from there. |

I was most definitely joking with you concerning your knowledge - like I said I have perused your posts. I used to have a Professor who said 'If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull shyt'. Recalled that when I was typing and I may have been out of line, sorry. The 138 only has the PLL opened up and I can slide up and down a bit. I have a cobra 29 GTL in which the case has never even been cracked open. I'm going to try that. The funny thing is the my primary go-to antenna is a 1/4 wave (way up there) w/drooping radials at about 45 degrees fed directly; it is efficient with a SWR that never goes more than 1.3:1. It's got no gain, but works for me. The jumpers seem to be sound. In any event, I have a general coverage HF rig with the 11 meter opened up that pushes 40 watts (AM)and it works clean and I get a signal out there, both local and DX. I am going to take you advice and 'start with the radio, go to jumpers & work from there.' Thanks again, Joe |
