Hello,I have came across some people talk about bird watt meters and say they are the best ever. they told me that people that put out 500 watts pep was only getting 150-200 watts with a bird and 500 with any other, why is this? what makes them so much better than a radio shack meter or any other? if they even are. BIRD METERS ARE TOP OF THE LINE ...... They are not cheap and require slugs for each band also not cheap. I have one with slugs for several bands. On 6 since 66

so how does it compare to a cheap radio shack meter do you have a smaller watt reading with the bird watt meter? and does the bird measure the wattage diffrently? EX:like RMS? Flying High and Flying Proud!!!!!!!! CEF# 1028

as per bird....With a full-scale accuracy of ± 5%. my diamond sx100 comes with papers that say between 5-10% depending on model'. my palstar 150m says the same. dead key, i have all 3 show the same exact watts when measured 1/2 scale & full scale, 100 watt slug and 1000 watt slug on the bird vs 300 watt scale & 3000 watt scale on the diamond & palstar. my palstar is the only active PEP reading meter i have. 1000 watts PEP on the palstar shows between 800-1200 on the diamond, depending on which side of SWR 'low' the freq is being checked. the peak modified bird shows slightly higher. which is correct, who knows. really, who cares. 10% of 100 watts or 1kw is NOT enough to make any difference, 10% of 2 watts or 4 watts is NOT enough to blow up anything....so again, who cares. NOW what you are actually asking, based on what you hear on the CB, 'what is bird watts' is THE DEAD KEY WATTS. RMS carrier only, no modulated watt readings. 'i'm running 200 bird watts' and he's hitting you 30 over S9 most likely means he is running a 200 watt dead key that is peaking far higher than 1:4 ratio, maybe 2kw, into an 8 element beam, or an erp of near 60kw. gotta understand the double talk of the channel 6 gang. even at a 1:4 ratio, '200 bird watts' peaking 800 watts into the same large beam, is producing an effective radiated power approaching 20 or more kw. 'bird watts' is kinda reverse bragging, saying i'm 'only' running XX watts, when everybody KNOWS the end result is far higher. or, bird watts means "NOTHING"! |

So if I understand you correctly bird is the best and I will have a more accurate reading with a bird meter it could be more or less with my radio shack meter but a bird meter is the industry standard and is more accurate. Thanks Bruce Flying High and Flying Proud!!!!!!!! CEF# 1028
