Hello,
I was wondering if i needed an amp or something so people can hear me when the skip is on? I only have a 148 with a echo mic but seems like no one can hear me

While an amplifier will generally help remember IF the condition's are NOT there you can have the biggest amp and still have NO DX / long distance contact's.
A PRE-AMP be it in an Amp or just a Pre-Amp like the:

Nighlinks,
I believe that having at around 100 watts pep helps considerably. I generally can reach out and touch pretty much anyone that I can hear when skip is rollling with about 50 watts rms with about 180 pep. |

A better antenna will work better than an amp. A preamp is useless if you have a noise level. Invest in a good antenna system, boost both receive and transmit.

I AGREE 100 PERCENT WITH n8fgb a good antenna is the most important i had in PUERTO RICO a MOONRAKER 4 AND TALK WITH MEXICO GUATEMALA NEW YORK VENEZUELA AND THEY SOUND LIKE LOCAL. COBRA 2000 GTL 12 volts AM 24 volts SSB NO AMP AND I HEAR EVREYONE AND EVREYONE HEAR ME. THE ANTENNA IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THATS THE POINT |

I had a hunch about the antenna but because everyone i hear sounds really loud. I was thinking that i might need a amp so they can hear me. I have solarcon 99 but i don't have it installed. I'm currently using a 39" antenna up in the roof.

A 39 inch antenna is not going to get you very far.
A A-99 is a good start.

Get the a99 up as soon as you can at 36 ft if possible and you will get out 10 times better than the 39" on the roof. that is most likely the problem as you cant get out very well on that. is it a mobile? if it is it needs a ground plane like the car roof or trunk.
get that a99 up and you will be pleasently surprised.

agreed with airplane1 I had a magnet mount cheep antenna when I first started in radio Icould get out maybe5 miles hooked up the Imax and said hello to the world get the A99 up as high as you can or are allowed it will make a world of difference

Even if you place the A-99 at ground level you would see a big increase in performance. Install the 99 as soon as possible. You'll be glad you did. |

And don`t forget make sure those SWRs are low they play a very important part of your antenna performance.

I was planning on putting up the a99 up on the roof by the middle of september before the cold kicks in.

nightlinks, all day sunday i was running 12 watts dead key/45 watts swing on a maco v5/8 antenna just 22' to the feedpoint. on AM 13 i was getting signal reports of 10-20- even 40 over S9. that is an exceptionally strong signal-especially for just 45 watts. a local running 4 watts on a cobra 29 with a magnet mount antenna stuck to a gutter was getting out to georgia! you DON'T need much when conditions are good! 100-200 watts is EASY to run & if you can't get out then, you will probably need to invest THOUSANDS of dollars more, so go for the 100-200! |

Hi guys, I'd like to add a little to this old thread. I have an imax2000 with the feed about 35 to 40 ' in the air and I've had several great radios such as a Cobra 2000 gtl, Cobra 148 gtl, Galaxy SSB Melaka well I could go on a lot further with great radios but I won't. All of these radios were not super modded just tuned up to a normal good sounding radio. Well my shack is almost up to 375 ft. above sea level and I very seldom was able to make skip connections even when it was running hot and heavy, but I very seldom was able to make any contacts on heavy skip days until I got an old Galaxy 225 2 pill with 2 transistors that would max out at 135 to 150 PEP with 2 watts to 4 watts dead key.
But Let me say this when I got the Galaxy 225 I made 100's of DX contacts here in the USA and across the pond to the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, England, Canary Islands and many more with almost always getting reports of 5 over 9 and usually could talk to the DX connections for up to 30 minutes if they felt like QSO'ing that long.
So it is important to have a good antenna and a good radio but without the extra watts it was always a •••• shoot to try to make connections. So that is pretty much my views on skip. thanks |

a GOOD antenna like ya got is a must. a GREAT
antenna like a beam is even better.yes raising
your output will help ya get out better ,but
dont confuse that as a must have.cause now at
say 150 watts pep you,ll need to double that
for the recieving end to see just 1 sunit increase
you can raise your current antenna up higher or
mount a flatside 3 element yagi and likely should
do better. and with dx the flatside would almost
always be better but probaly at all the time.
