Well, I'll get in here and give you a response while you wait for someone with an S980 to get back to you. I've owned an S9 for four years now and really like it. I actually use it for 10m SSB to talk to a local friend. I have been using an Astatic D104-M6B handheld mic with great audio reports. Stock mic works good too. I've owned a pile of radios and I can honestly say I would buy this one over again. If the S980 is as good as this one, and I know it will be better, you're going to LOVE it. Have fun! |

I have a new S9 as well and was surprised on it's performance. It seems the newest ones or the one I have is great. The TG is one mean feature for "barefoot" keydowns.... |

Well I finally got my S-980. got it on the 12th and everything works well but it is acting kinda weird. When you first turn it on and let it set for 10 to 15 mins it squeels when you key up no matter what the talkback or mic gain is at. Also after you talk for a while and it cools down the next time you key up the echo goes haywire but after you talk for a bit (with echo off) It'll work fine when turned back on. also the talkback isn't very clear, kinda muffled but that aint to big a deal. One other thing, when the top gun mod. is turned on the dead key does not drop unless you turn down the RF gain but at 2w DK it peaks at 50-60 and all the way up DK's 70-80 and peak well over 100w.They advertised it as 1w DK and 80+w swing. I was very surprised at the power with this radio and everyone that has listened to it said it is top shelf. I've ran it in the house on a ps21kx power supply(only pulls 10 amps)into a I-max 2000 at 40ft with 1.2 swr with a RK56 mic and in the truck on a wilson 2000 trucker with 1.2 swr. My meter is a dosy 4001 test center. Any thoughts will greatfully appriciaited. Stepchild CEF-187

Stepchild, Sorry but I have not used an S-980 as yet or worked on one and have no experience with them. I would suggest that you contact Sam Lewis direct since you have the factory warranty on it for Help/Information. You want to leave the "rf gain" all the way up, it only controls the level of incoming signals. With the top gun modulator ON turn the "power knob" all the way to the left for the lowest deadkey and when you speak you get the highest swing. Everything should be ok with your new Magnum, it just takes time to get used to all the controls. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

Hot wire Thanks for the help, I ment "rf pwr" insted of "gain" LOL.I've been foolin around with my magnum and this is what I've come up with. The standered 14g power wire that came with the radio isnt enough so I up graded to a 12g double fused wire after the original(14g) got so hot it melted the top out of the fuse holder. You are right gonna take some gettin use to. The TG on mine with the pwr down is 1w DK and 50-60 peak and pwr up 80w DK and 140w peak. and 120-140 SSB. I've been runnin it at 20w DK and 100w peak witout the TG and if it needs a little kick... well you know. Runnin the Mic gain at full on SSB with no bad reports so far. Haven't had anymore problems with the echo after replacing the pwr wire. I've talked quite a bit of skip on it with great reports back both AM and SSB and it does drift a little and the clarifier is unlocked and I DO NOT like that at all, But when it reads say 27.3850 your dead on freq. I'm gonna play with it a little longer and see how it does. Dale, everyone has said that mine is loud and very clear with or without the TG unless were a little too close. Stepchild CEF-187

Stepchild, are you sure that you are getting an 80 watt carrier. What type of meter are you useing? That really seems very high, also those peak numbers seem a little high also. |
