Hello, could it do any damage if i run my Fatboy mobile 2 pill(2879's) on my marine deep cycle batt.Right now im only getting about 200 out of it ,would it mess up the amps transitors eventually?. I am running a rci 2980 dead keying 2 1/2 watts swinging about 35-40 into the amp. They say the amp is suppose to do 450-500. It is a highdrive.Or should i wait a just get a powersupply,And what size. And also what does highdrive mean.

Shaggy365,

WELCOME to the Copper Electronics Forum,

I have never just used a battery by it's self to run a mobile amp before so can't help there.

shaggy, 1st, 2 & 1/2 watts dead key into the fatboy should be fine....adjust radio DEAD KEY til dead key of AMPLIFIER is around 100 watts or less, then turn up mic gain til AMPLIFIER swings(PEP) to around 300. check how HOT it gets, you MAY be able to increase mic gain to show 400 watts PEP from amplifier. MAYBE. you will NOT see anywhere near 500 swing using just a battery, no matter how fully charged it is. without having a battery charger on the battery AND running, every time you key up, the battery's voltage will drop & power output will drop. probably won't cause any damage to amplifier til voltage drops enough where relay in amplifier starts to chatter as soon as you key up.
as for using a battery charger on a battery inside a house.....you really shouldn't. a sealed battery(like an optima) MAY not allow any gasses to escape inside the house, but if it is NOT a sealed battery, the heating of the fluid by the discharge of keying & charge from the charger may just eventually overcome you....& you'll be found in a heap on the floor in the morning. i have built an 'outside battery & charger setup' twice, using the outside entrance to a basement for a couple people. ventilated to the outside with no air infiltration inside to the basement. one is currently in use after over 10 years. probably not worth the cost or effort vs buying a couple of power supplies.
that fatboy may draw less then 20 amps dead key, but 'swing' & it may pull over 50. MAYBE. i wouldn't try anything less then 50 amps with a 2 pill custom amp, if it shuts down/throws breaker/won't do 400 PEP without struggling, parallel a 2nd PS & you'll be good.
more expensive then a battery for sure, but better then killing youself & burning down the house .

radio w/2w dead key, 25 PEP into a 2x2879 class 'C' davemade got about 100 key/365 PEP and pulled about 40 amps.
same radio, 3 key/14 PEP into a class'AB1' texas star dx350 got 75 key/240 PEP and pulled about 28 amps.
power supply is a 50 amp daiwa switching type.
i know the davemade can get 'hit' harder, but after 350 watts PEP output, it gets real trashy, so why bother? the fatboy will probably end up in the same boat. go with the biggest PS you can afford, minimum 50 amp & you should be good, 60 or 70 amp & you may be able to use texas star dx400/500 if the need arose.
