IF you have to ask, please DON'T DO IT YOURSELF!!!!
Even unplugged the amp still holds a charge and needs to be discharged before removing/replacing tubes or and other repairs.
Take it to someone that REALLY knows what they are doing. They BITE and they BITE HARD!!
Will knock your (BEEP) in the dirt!!!

that's no joke! I had an old tube amp that was given to me by an old timer and I decided to take a look inside. there was a broken solder joint. When I reached in there to get the wire back in place to re solder ZAP!!! My arm hurt for a good hour, so I took it to my grandpa who just laughed, discharged the little bugger (guess my arm didn't do it all the way) and fixed it. Lesson learned.... |

Changing vacum tubes can be VERY DANGEROUS if you do not know what you are doing.
Do a GOOGLE SEARCH for: changing vacuum tubes
Be very careful and if you have any doubht's please have a radio shop change them for you.

Ok so now we are telling people to take their amp to an expert which in my area will be a guy with a light bulb, a screw driver and pair of diagonal wire cutters to change out tubes???? No offense intended but at what point is it safe for someone to get out of bed? More people get killed driving to and from school events or work then have ever been killed by changing tubes I am sure but no one tells a person not to get in their car just stay in bed where it is safe!!! What ever you do do not go to school or work by motor vehicle or your might die!!!
Their are bleeder resistors in the circuit for a reason. Not hard to take a plastic handled screw driver after a day of sitting and make sure all caps are bleed down via an number of methods. I normally key the power circuit with the unit unplugged and flipped on with a plastic handled screw driver. Some guys look for arching around the tube power supply area with the screw driver. One Amateur that is also RF Broadcast Engineer on line recommends the latter screw driver method on amps until no arcing remains. Just saying not like it is some magical beast that is looking to kill you! The 900 or less more then likely 750 volts tops under load feeding those tubes is not going to reach across the room and zap you. Their is more juice running inch's away from your head if you have sat next to a neon sign while eating out or going through your spark plug wires those normally carry 50,000 or more volts but we do not tell people. What ever you do do not pop your hood!!! Just saying life is full of risk and high voltages. Anyone that thinks changing tubes is risky should maybe ask their local law enforcement to not shoot people in the chest with high voltage tazer's since more people die each year from that I am sure then will die this year changing the tubes in their Black Market linear. |
