When I have my 2950 mounted on the factory mount in the truck it will make a popping sound through the ext speaker and will stop transmitting, receiving and no talkback. So I unplugged the speaker and it still does it so I checked the coax, power plug, and mic plug and all are good. Then I took it off the mount and it works fine. Then put it back and starts acting up again. So I thought the mounting screws may be too long(they'er not factory)And opened the case and they'er not touching anything even with the covers off. So I put it all back together and went back in the truck, turned it on and mounted it and when it is pulled sideways slightly on the mount is were it starts acting up.No RX,TX, but the lights work and when you key the mic it still beeps. What's the deal???? Stepchild CEF-187

I would suspect a cold solder joint somewhere. When the chassis is flexed it pulls apart the soldered connection. Not actually examining the radio myself I can't determine where the suspect joint is. Sometimes you can find it by poking around and pushing down on the board with a soft non-conductive tool like a pencil eraser. The best advice I can give you is to use a soldering pencil/gun and go over all the solder connections inside. Quickly reheat the solder so that it melts back together again. Now I believe that I have heard of this very same problem before with the same radio. The cause was a cold solder joint and in severe cases the chassis was actually cracked. The cause was from over tightening the mounting screws. Look for the damage along the edges of the board near the mounting holes. Good luck! Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

Kenny is right about checking solder joints. Check all grounds that are attached to chassis and check the screws that mount board to chassis, they sometimes loosen up. Also do not tighten the mounting screws real tight. HARVE UNIT199 CEF0210 CVC#018

Yeah Shredder Bruce is correct being that the radio has recieve working. I doubt an swr of 2 would have hurt anything. As a matter of fact....and a lot of people I know will disagree....excluding amplifiers, high swr burning out finals is a cb myth. May have been the case in the olden days but with radios of today high swr will not damage finals, they are protected from it. What does damage finals is a short in the coax or the antenna, a bad damaged antenna. Your 2950 could have a simple problem like a bad mic connection or from your deteriated antenna the final could be destroyed. If so it is an easy fix. A little practice with a soldering iron, good pair of eyes and a steady hand not to mention patience you could get er done. Get those books from Copper! Get yourself a troubleshooting guide. Shredder, Nobody can tell if you have a 1.6 swr or a 1.1. It can be stressful working to get a perfect swr and is understandable when your only running a legal 4 watt radio. Being that you have a 1.3 on 40 and a 1.6 on 1 means your antenna is a bit short. It really should not effect the performance to the point the radio will not get out very good. There is not much more you can do besides maybe better coax and a different meter. You may need to re-position the antenna or raise it up a little higher. When I install antennas I use 3 different swr meters that all read slightly different. Gives me an idea of the true swr. If you want to try grounding the connector to the pole you can but I doubt that is going to fix the swr. Drilling into the pole is your call. The coating prevents rust. If the antenna is up high enough and attached to a pole that goes into the ground, your coax is good and the radio is working right even with a 1.3-1.6 swr it should be receiving and transmitting fine. Good luck. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

Hey kenny,i do think i need to be up higher only getting out about 10-12 miles am or ssb. got some info from tech 808 on how to ground the tower legs & stuff got that done today.just in time, going to snow a few "s they say.. i also have 3 swr meters & 2 swr/tuners all a little different & the ones in the radios. grounding didnt make a diff. with swr, winters here so maybee ill put it up higher in the spring..all my radios been tuned by copper,or someone. hey is there a way to get call numbers for side band or am without having a ham lic.? thanks kenny , ~SHREDDER~ CEF#1002 |

Many sidebanders just make up their own call numbers but if you want to join a club you can find them all over the internet. Also like in my area we have a local club that meets on channel 38 LSB. If you notice ssb'ers in you area with the same prefix before their numbers they are club members. Ask them about the club they are apart of and if you are interested maybe you could join and be issued a number from the club leader or president. If I'm on channel 13 I use cef491, on other channels I remove the prefix "cef" and just use 491. When I make contacts internationally I use 2KD491 the prefix "2" which means I am in the United States "KD" which is the club ID or in my case it is my first and last initials of my name and "491" my personal ID or club member number that I have been using for a while now.
