I HAVE A PRIDE 150 MOBILE LINEAR WHICH I NOTICED WHEN HOOKED UP, THE WATTAGE FROM THE RADIO USED WITH THE AMP DROPS,THE DEAD KEY THAT IS, SAY THE RADIO DEAD KEYS AT 2 WATTS,WHEN THE AMP IS HOOKED UP,EVEN WITH THE AMP TURNED OFF,THE RADIO'S DEAD KEY IS ABOUT 1 WATT, WITH THE AMP ON,THE WATTAGE WILL BE AROUND 10 WATTS DEAD KEY,WHICH IS WAY TO LOW FOR THAT AMP,AND SWING TO CLOSE TO 150,BUT I THINK IT SHOULD BE DEAD KEYING AT AROUND 50-60 WATTS,ALSO I NOTICE WITH THE AMP ON THE SWR IS A BIT HIGHER THAN IT SHOULD BE,ABOUT A 2, IM GUESSING MAYBE A BAD S0-239 CONNECTOR,OR POSSIBLY A RELAY ? ITS NOT THE JUMPER CABLES AS IVE TRYED DIFFERENT CABLES AND MAKE SURE THE CONNECTIONS ARE TIGHT WITH THE SAME RESULT. IM USING 8 GAUGE CABLE WITH THE AMP ON A 50 AMP POWER SUPPLY SO THATS NOT AN ISSUE EITHER. ANYONE EVER EXPERIENCE SOMETHING SIMILIAR TO THIS OR HAVE A POSSIBLE SOLUTION ? THANX IN ADVANCE |

Make sure that all components are properly grounded (case ground) to a common ground connection. CEF #964 HAM #276 Ham Radio - Talk worldwide on a tin can and a wet noodle

Since it does it in the off position too, lets take the simple route. Your signal would go into the box via the so 239 connector. then usually thru a capacitor (dc blocking usually a silver mica or "103" ceramic disc)to the relay. the relay in the off position is jumped right to the output usually through a cap again then out to the so239. from the input side of the relay there will be a wire or trace that goes to the keying circuit as well, if something is providing a low impedance to ground there, it could also effect your signal. Using a test lead with aligator clips you can; bypass or jump the input cap,(test output) do the same on the output cap, jump the relay, disconnect keying circuit. This should be done with the amp off! power is not even need to the box, since this is effecting it with the amp off. Good luck. |

Do you recalibrate the SWR meter each time you turn your amp on and off and is it an external meter? Many times with cb amps this is actually pretty common. What antenna are you using?? More times than not it is an antenna issue. Also, sometimes you need to shorten power cables and external speaker wires. Grounds are very important as well. With a little more info we may be able to help a little better. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

THANKS FOR THE REPLYS GUY,GREATLY APPRCIATED, IN THE CASE OF PRIDE 150,I THINK DRUZO MAY BE RIGHT,SINCE WHEN I SWITCH TO MY OTHER 2 PRIDES,BOTH MODEL 100, THE SWR & POWER OUTPUT IS FINE,I USE # 8 GAUGE CABLE WITH QUICK DISCONNECTS ON ALL MY AMPLIFIERS,SO I CAN SWITCH BETWEEN THE AMPS IN SECONDS WHEN I FEEL LIKE,ANTENNA WISE IM USING AN ANTRON 99,JUST REPLACED IT A MONTH AGO,THE OLD ANTRON WAS UP THERE ABOUT 10 YEARS SO I FIGURED A CHANGE WAS IN ORDER, NOW WHAT I HAVE NOTICED IN THE LST FEW DAYS,WHICH I CANT SEEM TO FIGURE OUT,ON SOME AMPLIFERS,WHEN I TURN THE AMP ON,THE SWR IS PINNED/IN THE RED,WITH THAT SAME AMP OFF,THE SWR IS NORMAL,SAY 1.1 OR SO, I NOTICE WHEN I HOOK UP THE TX STAR 350 & THE PRIDE 100, THE SWR IS FINE,ABOUT 1.5-1.7 WITH THE AMP ON WHICH IS OK,IF I HOOK UP MY TX STAR 250,IT SEEMS LIKE THERES NO ANTENNA PLUGGED IN,VERY LOW RECIEVE,PIN JOB WHEN I TURN THE AMP ON, NOW WITH MY HURRICANE 350,SWR IS FLAT WITH BOX IN LINE BUT TURNED OFF,TURN IT ON, AND THE SWR GOES FROM FLAT INTO THE RED ZONE, ALL MY JUMPERS ARE THE SILVER BELDEN COAX,I TRIED SWITCHIN 3 DIFFERENT JUMPER CABLES WITH THE AMPS GIVING ME A HARD TIME,NO DIFFERENCE,TRYED 3 DIFFERENT RADIO'S,SAME THING,IM THINKING MAYBE THE PL-259 ON THE ANTENNA COAX NEEDS TO BE RESOLDERED ? ALSO I NOTICE WHEN THE SWR IS PINNED WHILE USING SAY THE HURRICANE 350 WITH A 1WATT DEAD KEY,IF I TURN THE WATTAGE ON THE RADIO UP TO 3-4 WATTS DEAD KEY,THE SWR GOES BACK DOWN TO A RESPECTABLE LEVEL,AROUND 1.5 OR SO,DROP THE WATTAGE BACK TO A 1 WATT DEAD KEY,THE SWR IS IN THE RED AGAIN,TURN THE AMP OFF, SWR IS FLAT, THE CABLE RUNNING TO THE ANTENNA IS THE SILVER BELDEN CABLE AS WELL, SOMETHING IS TELLING ME THERE IS A LOOSE CONNECTION SOMEWHERE DUE TO THE FACT THAT WHEN THE RADIO DEAD KEY IS INCREASED FROM 1 WATT TO SAY 3 OR 4 WATTS,THE SWR GOES DOWN ,IVE HEARD SOMETIMES INCREASING WATTAGE CAN MAKE THE EQUIPMENT RUN BETTER IF THERE IS A SHORT SOMEWHERE,ANY1 EVER HEAR OF THIS OR IS THIS JUST MY LUCK ??? THANX AGAIN GUYS,GOOD & HELPFUL POSTS AS USUAL ! |

ALSO, TO NOTE..THE PROBLEM IM HAVING WITH CERTAIN AMPS,I TRIED TAKING MY DOSY METER OFFLINE THINKING MAYBE ITS THE METER AND HOOKING JUST THE RADIO UP WITH AMP,CERTAIN RADIO'S STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM,EVEN HOOKED UP THE HURRICANE 350 WITH MY VOYAGE VR9000 ON A 300WATT DUMMY LOAD,AS SOON AS I KEYED UP,SWR PINNED, HOTWIRE I DO RECALIBRATE THE SWR EACH TIME I USE A DIFFERENT AMP OR WHEN TURNING IT ON,THE SWR IS STILL SAY A 1.5 ON MY DOSY METER WHEN IM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE HURRICANE OR SELECT FEW OTHER AMPS, THE SWR IS SKY HIGH ON THE RADIO,NOT ON THE METER,SO THE PROBLEM HAS TO BE BETWEEN THE AMP & THE RADIO,BECAUSE WHEN IT LEAVES THE RADIO, FROM THE METER ON OUT TO ANTENNA THE SWR IS NORMAL,IM REALLY BAFFLED AT THIS,NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF THIS BEFORE,I HAVE A FRIEND COMING OVER THUR,HE'S PRETTY GOOD AT DIAGNOSING STUFF LIKE THIS SO HOPEFULLY HE FIGURES IT OUT,HE SAID MAYBE HE HAS TO RESOLDER THE PL259 ON THE ANTENNA COAX,HE'S GONNA CHECK WITH HIS METER ALL THE JUMPERS & SUCH,HE SAID MAYBE ITS A BAD JUMPER BUT I TOLD HIM I SWITCHED TO LIKE 3 DIFFERENT JUMPERS,I USE THE 6 FT JUMPERS NOW SINCE I HAVE A TUBE AMP ON THE FLOOR & NEED THE XTRA FEW FEET TO MAKE IT TO THE AMP,I USED TO USE 3 FT JUMPERS BUT I DOUBT THE EXTRA 3 FT HAS ANY BEARING SINCE I WAS USING THE 6FT JUMPERS FOR MONTHS WITH NO PROBLE,ALL OF A SUDDEN SOME AMPS I CAN USE,SOME I CANT,GO FIGURE THAT 1 OUT |
