Ok I know that I am a year or two late (story of my life ) but I have been looking around and got to thinking about the MURS radios. I know that they are 5 channels VHF and license free, but I was looking for something better for the family than those FRS radios. I found a radio that was prefect for what I wanted Maxon TruTalk-25 but as I got ready to do a purchase I saw that they had been discontinued (apparently for sometime now) . I'm really quick on things like that ... Can anyone tell me where I might find something similar or even a place that might have that model radio used/refurbished? I have looked on ebay but found that there are a bunch of handhelds that when you type in MURS radios you get radios made in and shipped from China. I know that is where 96% are made but the shipping is killer and are they going to perform like I want them to and I don't want to do anything illegal. Can someone/anyone point me in the right direction? I just wished that Copper sold these then I wouldn’t have any worries. well anyway I do appreciate any help I can get. Thanks Much!! Tomcatinva, Go to: www.google.com or 1 of the internet auction site's and do a search for "MURS Radio's". Murs radios are just not very popular anymore and may be hard to find. Good luck. Lon~Tech808 CEF#0808/HAM#001/CVC#0002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

Good Morning Lon... Thanks for the reply. Yea I have noticed that they are very hard to find. I did a search on eBay and these Puxing and Jingjong radios from China came up (never heard of them before). I do know that you can program the NOAA freqs. into the radio as they are VHF radios and have a range of around 136 to 174MHz but I wasn't sure if the weather alert freq. could be programmed in somehow, kind of like monitoring the weather channel without constantly listen to NOAA weather. Cobra had (some years back) a GMRS/FRS radio PR-2000WX that monitored the weather and at the same time you could use the radio for conversations/monitoring a channel and if a weather emergency came up it would send a tone and the weather alert would be announced. If you or anyone else knows of a way of doing that I would appreciate the info. Anyway, thanks again for the reply and I hope that everyone has a Great Day!!! TomCat in VA CEF217

Bruce, I had seen the Jingjong radios and the Puxing PX-888 model. But on the Jingjong radios I know you can program the weather freq in for monitoring only. But is it possible to get it to alert you when there is bad weather approaching? You know that annoying tone that NOAA sends out but gets your attention... TomCat in VA CEF217

TomCat, We use a pair of the Cobra MicroTalk model# LI 7500 GMRS/FRS handheld radios. Now I'm gonna brag on these a little. They are the most amazing of the cheaper walkies I have ever seen. They claim 25 miles but I did get an honest 5 miles plus of absolute reliable communication. AT ten miles of flat terrain I had to stand still and open the squelch but still worked. They are powerful. Powerful enough to interfere with the cb in my van! The receive is excellent as I pick up stations as far away as 25 miles and more repeaters than I knew exsisted! I can even monitor Circle City React which is 30 miles away! Ten weather channels and I can pull in 3 with ease. Has roger beeps voice activated and all the extras like tone coded squelch/continious tone coded squelch, it is nice. The best thing about it is I never have it in the charger! The thing just will not go dead with the power saver and lithium ion battery which is HUGE! The walkie is heavy and does not feel cheap in your hand. A step or two above your average cheapo! A pair cost me 70 bucks! Cobra has a newer model which boasts even more mileage, the 7700 I think. Just wanted to get in here and let you know what I think is the best affordable gmrs radio from my own hands on use! They really work very well!73 Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

Yeah Bruce is correct. For a fee of 75 dollars I bet 99% of the GMRS users are bootlegging, not even aware of a license. Guess it pays to read the fine print. Maybe stores like Walmart should put a sign up at the display. The FRS segment in the radio works really well although the power output is cut in half. Bruce thanks for the input I have the MURS freq. programmed in my scanner and it has been quiet in my area. Hotwire I also have a pair of Cobra GMRS/FRS radios model PR2000WX and I love those they have the "options" I want and has the removable antenna and Weather alerts. But the range even with different antennas isn't the greatest and the fact that more people have the GMRS/FRS with or without license can cause some problems. But I was looking at the VHF side of radios, thinking about getting into something new and adventurous. Plus if I like it enough who knows maybe go for my 2meter ham ticket... My ideal radio for the MURS is/was the Legacy TruTalk-25 as that had all of the MURS freqs, weather alerts and a removable antenna. I like the imports from China/Hong Kong priced is right and if I do decide to get my ticket then I can use the radio for those freq. without having to buy any more equipment, which will make my wife happy... LOL!!! Ok I know I was getting LONG winded but that's it in a nut shell... )I think I need to lay off the coffee... LOL!!! Thanks all!! Any other ideas are greatly appreciated!! TomCat in VA CEF217

Only other form of communications I can think besides 2meter and vhf/uhf cb is the cell phones with the push to talk feature. Sure they run duplex like 2meter radios and such. Not sure the band, probably cellular band. The whole cellular system is complicated and very sophisticated! Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

I use MURS quiet often, but hear no one else on, also GMRS radio and have never heard anyone on either, with a jpole at 25 feet. My friend has heard a few on MURS at his place, using the 19-1210 and a j pole at 60 feet. REVPO/CEF795 73 REVPO/DOCTOR/CEF 795 Wavin a hand from the cornfields of INDIANA

Revpo, Next time you ever have to go near Indy take your GMRS with you and put it on scan. Sometimes GMRS is buzzing with activity, even in Franklin. Lots of reapeater stations. You can hear them code ID ever so often on several channels. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

Pat, 462.6750mhz is Circle City React. The others I'm not sure, you just got to scan. Tomcat, You know I was surfing the other day and came across licencse free 900mhz handheld sets. Much more elaborate than the usual walkies. Not to exspensive but not cheap. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!
