I was doing a google search on radio mic's this evening and came across this mod for the Magnum 257 Mic. The Magnum 257's stock microphone is actually a power microphone and there is an adjustable potentiometer inside the microphone that can be adjusted for more microphone gain. I opened up the stock microphone and sure enough there was a pot inside. I adjusted it to maximum and then tested out the radio again and this time everyone said that my voice was LOUD and clear. Hope this helps out those that own a Magnum 257. George KI4NBE CEF#Ø476 HAM#Ø181 CVC#ØØ14

I did that on mine about a month ago when I got it,made all the difference in the world. The mic that came with the radio looked different than the picture too,it`s a better looking bigger mic.I really like the radio, just wish the receive was a little better. Freddie |

Freddie, What do you wish was better about the receiver in the Magnum 257? Some owners rank the 257 up there with the HR2510 and Lincoln rigs. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

I have the 357 the 257's big brother and cannot fault the receive. I rate it better than my IC 725. CEFFFCEF Bob CEF703/CVC26 703 New South Wales

I`ve hooked it up on my base antenna and it just doesn`t hear as well as my Washington or a 148.Maybe I need to find a good tech to tune up the receive,it is good to know it`s supposed to be better. Freddie |

Well, if your comparing it to a President Washington or Cobra 148 then no wonder! I beleive it is the 8719 pll/chassis if my memoery is correct that is second to none when it comes to great well designed receiver. Regardless you have 3 of the best CB/export sidebanders around! I doubt the 257 needs a tune up. Your ears are just used to the low noise sensitivity of the Washington and the abilty of the 148 to snatch up signals from the hash and trash! OH YEAH, I just added a Washington to my collection not long ago also! I'll never part with it.....unless I found a youngster who is really interested in cb radio and should know how a quality radio is supposed to perform.
