I recently acquired a mobile amplifier that i cant find any information about on the web. It looks like a car stereo in design,FLAT SILVER HEATSINKED BODY ALL AROUND,FRONT SAYS ''HURRICANE 350'' , HAS SWITCH IN FRONT FOR POWER, A SWITCH FOR PRE-AMP WHICH ALSO HAS A POTENTIOMETER TO ADJUST MIN OR MAX GAIN ON PREAMP AND ANOTHER POTENTIOMETER FOR SSB/AM DELAY, TO INCREASE OR SLOW DOWN DELAY, AND A RELATIVE OUTPUT METER ON FRONT OF AMP THAT FUNCTIONS AS WELL. THE BOTTOM ON THE UNIT HAS A METAL TAGE THAT SAYS 2-30MHZ, AM/FM/CW-350 WATTS, SSB 650 P.E.P, THE AMP PERFORMS FLAWLESS,WHEN TESTED ON MY GALAXY 959 WITH A 1 WATT DEAD KEY ON AM, THE OUTPUT WAS A 20 WATT DEAD KEY,SWINGING TO 350WATTS, 400 + ON S.S.B., AUDIO REPORTS FROM A FEW LOCALS STATED IT WAS VERY CLEAN QUALITY,SOUNDED LIKE MY TX STAR AMP, 3 WATTS IN PRODUCED 200 WATT DEAD KEY AND SWUNG TO ALMOST 400 USING THE SAME RADIO/GALAXY 959, THE AMPLIFIER CAME IN A BOX THAT SAID BLACKCAT, WAWASEE ELECTRONICS,SYRACUSE INDIANA, I CANT FIND ANY INFO ON THAT BLACKCAT MODEL ON THE WEB, AN OLD TIME LOCAL FROM MY AREA SAID HE BELIEVES THAT AMP WAS AROUND IN THE EARLY 70'S . I NEVER SEEN AN AMP THAT WAS FLAT IN DESIN LIKE THIS/SIMILIAR TO CAR STEREO AMPLIFIER, I HAVE NOT OPENED THE AMP UP SINCE IT APPEARS TO HAVE HEX SCREWS IF IM SAYING IT CORRECTLY ON BOTTO OF AMP, SO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TYPE OF PILLS/TRANSISTORS ARE IN IT, ALL I KNOW IS ITS 1 OF THYE BEST PERFORMING/SOUNDING AMPS IVE EVER ATTAINED IN MY COLLECTION, ANY INFORMATION ON WHEN PRODUCED, TYPE OF TRANS IT USES, CLASS OF AMP,IM ASSUMING AB1 & SO ON WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. |

I don't know much about that amp but Wawasee did make the JB model of tube type base amps and many of them are still going strong today. Great amps and I say you have a keeper there!

i have some OLD brochures from * & * in ** from the late 80's with the hurricane 350, tornado and typhoon models, too. tried to scan to my computer to download here, but they don't show too well. they were quite popular as drivers for early 8 pill amps, including texas star dx1600's. had a tornado in an outboard boat around '88. i'll have to check the archives for.... |

Thanx for the reply guys. Pat, if you can scan the info on the hurricane 350 that would be great,if not whatever it says that i may not know would be appreciated,im curious as to what type of transistors are in there,some people may say why not just open the cover,but its not quite like a tx star 350 in terms of easily opening the case,it has a few hex type screws on the bottom cover, also does it say around what year that amp came out,its definitely 70's or maybe 80's, she's quite a performer though,the guy that owned it i doubt used it much,it was like new in the box but no manual or such,i couldnt ask the guy about it because he is deceased,the wife knew nothing except he was into cb radio & such for many years and wanted to get rid of whatever he had left so that was 1 of the items i got my hands on,she's a keeper for sure, THANX AGAIN GUYS,I APPRECIATE IT |

was made by TELCO, went for about $290 in 1988, used 4 x mrf454 for around 350 watts PEP. there was the storm 50, tornado 150, hurricane 350 & whirlwind 600.
