Both are GREAT! radios. If most of your on air time will be on the CB Band's I would pick the: RANGER SS-158EDX If you plan on using it on both the CB & HAM Band's then I would suggest the: MAGNUM 257 as it will give you more option's, and a smaller size radio. PS: I own and use both the Magnum 257 and Superstar 158EDX and BOTH radios are excellent performar's. Lon~Tech808 CEF#0808/HAM#001/CVC#0002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

My personal opinion now. Magnum 257 all the way. Especially if you plan to run sideband often! Kenny CEF491 Mudduck County Indiana The Hotwire Mobile coming soon to a radio near you!

My 158 has drifted from day one and haven't gotten around to fixing it yet,its most likely a problem with a bad crystal and Ranger doesn't carry replacements. The 158 is indeed a super talker and I have mine backed up by a TS250 and it has great audio and receive. The display is a little too bright but its something you get used to. Magnum makes a FAR better sidebander plus it is just a better radio in my personal opinion. I have heard both on air and I would have to go with the Magnum hands down. Research the web, look for as many reviews as you can on both radios. Many 158edx operators claim bad freq drift, some worse than others. Ive got a 158, it drifts for like 30 minutes or so then stays on frequency, but other then that it talks plenty loud without a power mic or messing with the amc cicuit. I do like the magnum, great looking radio and i heard one on air once, good sounding. |

Captain Radio you donot have to use RCI crystal filter. You can buy them after market and as long as the freq. is the same you are good to go. I had two go bad on my RCI 2950. I had my friend and tech use after market SSB crystal filter's. If the radio had not been stolen I would open it up and tell you what he put in their. I know he told me he used a part that was built to better specifications. It was slightly larger and was a tight fit. It had a big name brand sticker on the top of it. I want to say it was yellow with black letters. I believe it also altered the band width of the SSB signal to fall more in line with high end amateur gear. NEver had a problem again. |
