I've heard some locals here in NE Kansas say that the Solarcon antenna's can out-talk my Avanti astro plane while talking local distances up to & including 100 miles. I'm not refering to SKIP talking, I'm talking about ground wave local power talking!!
What are they basing their claims on???? I thought the higher the DB gain, the better the talk distance & after all, the astro plane has a higher DB gain & radiates more towards the horizon rather than straight up.
Comments welcome....Thanks in Advance

Lightning, I had an experience a long time back that I would consider explains my opinion about the issues your raise here. The fact that you are asking this question, in a way supports my own observations and opinions on the subject. I too grew curious about the differences I saw while comparing the working responses of my A99 and my AP, while comparing signals from a couple of neighbors using their horizontal beams. There is much more to the story, but maybe another time.

I compared the signals from a neighbor using his AP and then asked him to switch to his A99, I was amazed at the improve response from the AP. At the time I had both my AP and a Starduster up as my verticals along with a 4 element yagi. We reversed the test when I asked him to point his beam at me and let me switch between my SD and my AP and he was equally amazed at the difference in signals.

This does not answer your question directly, but maybe it will shed some light on the differences you are seeing or hearing about between the AP and the A99.

Many operators have said the AP is a strong contender when DX is working and that it is also a very quiet operating antenna. You hear similar comments when guys are describing their experiences with horizontal antennas vs. verticals. With my local work I find both antennas work about the same, with the TX edge going to the A99 and with the RX edge going to the AP. With DX work it is harder to really compare, but you might agree that the AP is known to be very responsive. AP’s are also reported to operate very quiet when conditions are quiet. I would give the edge to the AP during skip conditions in both responses.

I believe this improve horizontal response in the AP might deminish the local TX responses enough to see a difference and this may explain what your local buddies were talking about.
