After being packed away for 6 or 7 years, I decided it was time to get back on the air. So, I unpacked my TS-440S, put up a well-matched antenna, and turned everything on. The good news is that the transmit side of things seems to work quite well. Unfortunately, the receive side is a different story. I have very low audio on LSB, USB, and CW. The audio is there, and is understandable, but very weak (and my ears aren't what they used to be). There is no discernable movement of the S-meter. FM seems to work satisfactorily, though I haven't made any contacts in that modes. Its been suggested that a dirty (corroded after storage) TX/RX relay may be at fault, but wouldn't that affect all modes (FM included)? I'm thinking the problem may be in one of the Audio/IF amplifier stages (after the FM is split off to the discriminator. Any help or opinions would be appreciated. Tom - AA6MZ |

Are you sure you don't have the ATT (attenuator) depressed (in)? Also I've heard the ALC/PWR/SWR switch can cause this if it's dirty. Other than that,I'd say open it up and check all jumper connectors;unplug and re-attach;and if that doesn't help it's time for a trip to the service center? I hope it's merely an oversight somewhere! Good luck.73.Slim. |
