Tech
Would it be pos. to mod. this radio to 300 out?
I talked to someone the other day and they said the chasy could not handle the heat or maybe he was talking about the board. Im not up on mods anymore so wasn't sure about some of the stuff he was talking about. I thought I might buy the Jackson because it had a chasy that was built to take the heat but he said the RCI was a much stabler radio and would outtalk the Jackson even though the Jackson is running more output.
I am kind of lost in these areas. Please help. Thanks and God Bless. Regards Brad.

the thing i noticed with the stonewall jackson-and general grant-was that when cold, they would start off farther 'off frequency' then the 2990, 2995 & saturn turbo. once 'hot', drift was no different then any export, and maybe not as bad as some. i'm not sure if the power supply is any 'better' then the rci's, but with the usual mods including cap swap & rectifier, the jackson seems to make 200 watts PEP easier then the rci. as it seems with all the general radios, AM audio is pretty good. no 'galaxy' wobble on SSB-i guess the PS is big enough-but there was no common consensus on which was better on sideband. this is only 2 jacksons compared with close to 2 dozen 2990, 2995 & turbo's.
i'm not exactly sure what is meant by 'because it had a chasy that was built to take the heat'. all the aforementioned radios use 2-2sc2290's meant to make 160 clean watts. tuning & tweaking of the xmitter & PS can get some decent 200 watts out of them, though others get 200 watts of pure garbage. to get nearer to 300, you'd have to swap in 2879's & the corresponding adjustments to make it work. built to take the heat? if it handles 200, it'll handle 300.....whatever 'it' is. why bother? the 100 watt gain will only get you a 'needle's width' of signal increase.
i'd buy a jackson over the rci, do it up 'right' & enjoy a nice radio.

kill the power supply, thats what will happen.and that is a promise,200watts is mor than enough.buy you a high drive box like a sb221 and put 100 into it.the changeing of pills and the need for mor amps.and requires modifiying the amp circut just to use the 2879 pills.100watts is better than 300 if you got it set up right.good coax and antenna.i have lmr400 coax and a jo gunn ground plane.and my 2990 set to 150watts and i run with or better than the guys running davemade 4 or 500watt boxes
