I have 2 Magnum 257's one with the amber display and one with the blue display. Both are pre ERF-2030 finals. I have had the top gun Compressor added to the amber display model and the blue display came with that installed. My Question(s) is has anyone ever added the Top Gun Modulator in these models? And what is everyone's input on doing this? Let me know what you all think, you see I am trying to be "proactive" and getting ready for the next great cycle of DX that should be coming our way... (Ok I am hoping anyway...) Thanks for your input... TomCat in VA CEF217

Tomcatinva, After talking with Sam Lewis the Top Gun Modulator could be added to the Magnum 257 by a good tech if you would want it or think you would need it. Personally I have never seen or heard of any good reason to waste the money to do it/add it as the 257 is one of the BEST DXing radio's out there that needs no mods. And you will find the 257 performs at 100% right out of the box. Personally with 1000's of hours of DXing on ours by myself and several other Copper Forum Member's who we have loaned ours to to use I honestly can see no reason for wasting the money. Just my personal thought's, Lon~Tech808 CEF#0808/HAM#001/CVC#0002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

Lon, Thanks, you know that's the kind of information that I personally like to hear. I didn't know if it would give me any added benefit or not. I'm always looking for ideas on how I can improve things without having to replace or use too much $$$$, if you know what I mean... But sometimes it ends up not being what I expect it to be then it's frustrating and I wished I had left it alone. So yes I do appreciate your input very much. That will keep my money in my pocket, well at least until the wife and kids find something that they want... Hope you have a Wonderful Day!

I wish I had enough room in my car to do that, but I barely had enough room to mount the radio without it getting in my way. Now if there was a remote for the TS I would consider it... humm… oh no here come those ideas creeping into my head again, I'm afraid this is going to cost me some big $$$...

the 'compressor' portion of the topgun setup actually works fairly well. along with my S9, i have a grant xl with one in it, and it DOES make a difference on AM & SSB. check your PEP with it 'on' and with it 'off', you should see a few extra watts PEP just from the 'compressor'. the 'modulator' portion....well, on AM, it makes an external amp swing like crazy, but that can cause tvi issues. i have a new blue erf2030 magnum 257 in my truck for 10 meter use only. with no added power, (and no topgun), it touches 50 watts on 10m SSB and i have contacted EVERY SINGLE station i've called when E skip is running. i had it at the base for a week when i 1st got it & it does just around 60 PEP on 11m & i made numerous contacts on LSB 37 & 38 while testing it. have never tried on CB in the truck. would i add it to the 257? sure, why not, if i had one laying around. a speech compressor can NEVER hurt, and ALWAYS help if properly installed. |

just a thought ive seen people mount them under thier seats.not sure if id do that. id have to try and see, make sure it got propere ventalation.also another method ive seen is mounting them in the trounk.and i dont just mean leaving them lay around phyisally mounting them out of the way so you can actually still use your trunk. dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64

The top gun modulator is basically a npc mod, the input is taken right off of R238 and the output goes to the collector of the Regulator. I have a schematic and you have the basic components of a NPC mod. PNP switching transistor and a resistor. If it works it works but like all 25 dollar swing kits that you can make for 25 cents the choice is yours. Sorry for my 2 cents. |

What is the Top Gun Modulator? From the Top Gun Technologies web site: On 30-50 Watt radios, the dead-key or carrier can be set to 1 Watt or less with a modulation swing to the full output potential of the radio transmitter. If your radio with a Top Gun Modulator in it is swinging from a dead key of 1 watt to the Maximum output of your radio when transmitting it is working. Lon~Tech808 N9CEF~EN50mk CEF#0808~CVC#0002
