I have an rci 2950 that I recently bought. Ill give you a quickie about the radio. It can dead key 2 watts on low or 10 watts on high and swing 50 on am. On ssb it will swing also 50. it has talkback installed also. My question is as followed. I have the 2950 service manual. I tried the external s meter. Running a wire from the negative side of d14 diode. I did it from the top of the board, and soldered the wire to the neg side of the diode which has the black stripe on it. That wire in turn runs out the back of the radio and hooks up to an old cobra s meter I have. The only problem is, it does not work. My meter on the radio works fine but I do not like the digital lcd type. D14 was located right beside one of the pots. the meter is from an old cobra 29 I had laying around, and I know the the meter works fine.. also, do you think I can get some more power on ssb? I never tried to turn the power pot for ssb. The radio has a 12 volt lead going to tp7, alsong with the mod limiter removed, thanks 813 Rhode Island CEF#970 RCI 2950 Fatboy 2 Pill @ 15vdc Voyage VR9000

615_ri, It may be a simple fix.the banded end of the diode denotes the positive(+)end, try moving to the other end of the diode, one other thing could be the internal resistance of the meter fron the cobra may be to low for the detector section of the 2950. tech291 cef291/cvc6 kc8zpj |

This is the info I have...Solder the positive side of the meter to the banded cathode-end of D-14, and the ground-side of the meter to a circuit board ground-trace. With the RF gain all the way up, find a close-by strong signal and adjust VR-1 for S-9 on AM. SSB mode is adjusted by VR-2. |

615_ri, To find one go to: www.google.com and do a search for: Workman MD4 Meter But remember just using an S-Meter to give someone a S-unit report can be WAY OFF depending on your station setup, location, antenna, coax and conditions. I personally just give them a Signal report of exactly what I hear at my station and that is always 100% correct. Lon~Tech808 CEF#808/HAM#001/CVC#002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

I just did this mod to my 2970dx-150. I went with a different setup though, I made one of the preexisting holes in the back plate a little bigger and mounted a 1/8 female mono jack there. I then wired the collar of the connector to the ground on the circuit board and the tip to the cathode side of d-14...which by the way, is not marked in the newer 29 series radios. Its just to the left of the two potentiometers (vr-1 and vr-2) listed in the mod, and they "are" marked. Works like a champ, and I can hook up different meters as i feel like changing things up or run it without the meter and use the internal "Bar" style meter the radio utilizes.
